Problems Clearing Temp Internet Files in IE

I seem to be having a problem clearing the Temporary Internet Files in IE. After supposedly deleting the files, if I go to Windows Explorer, the various folders under the temp files show as empty (and I have WE configured to show all files, including normally hidden ones). But if I click on Properties for the Temp Internet Files folder, it still claims that I have over 37,000 files totalling 244mb. And the browser still acts like the files have not been deleted (slow response, untitled bitmaps when trying to save photos, etc.)

Clearly, either the files are not really being deleted, or the system doesn’t recognize that they have been deleted. Can I directly delete the actual Temporary Internet Files folder and then create a new one without screwing up the system?

You prabably have an internet cache overrun. PcPitstop.com has a javascript hotfix that will safely locate and delete the excess files:

Internet Explorer Cache Cleanup AutoFix

While you are there, run the whole online tune-up, it will point out a lot of easy tweaks and maintenance that will markedly improve your performace.

I wouldn’t delete the folder itself (although chances are it won’t harm anything), but anything inside the folder can be safely deleted, including subfolders.
