We’ve been trying to load Borland Paradox 7.0 onto a new coworker’s new Dell computer. Like the other three PCs in our department, her computer runs Windows XP Home edition. Paradox 7.0 loaded fine and runs fine on all three computers. When we tried to load it on hers, however, we got the following error message:
Paradox has been bought out by Corell and they don’t support Borland versions of it. Microsoft’s tech support hasn’t helped so far and, since this is a software problem, Dell’s technical support won’t help.
Does anyone have any ideas? I’m afraid changing the software or the OS is not an option. Thanks for your help.
Which directory does her computer use as a temporary one? Are you sure there’s enough space free on the drive? Can you get access to her temp folder?
A couple of things I can think of off the top of my head: the temp location is on a different partition from the main Windows install, and there’s not enough space in there, or she’s got disk quotas enabled, or there’s really not enough space.
It’s also possible that the TEMP environment variable isn’t set, and Paradox doesn’t know where to write to, but I think the other situations are more likely, and should be looked into first.
A call to Dell’s tech support in which we emphasized that we would return the computer if we couldn’t run this version of Paradox on it got things straightened out. It turns out there was a setting in Paradox’s set up which needed to be adjusted.
Thanks for your suggestions Dervorin. I was thinking along those lines myself, but we’ve been swamped, so I didn’t have time to investigate.
