Okay.
I’m reinstalling XP Home on a friend’s computer.
Her system is virus-riddled and the install was 4-years-old and slow even before it became infected.
I have downloaded the floppy disk for her motherboard, and am using XP’s F6 option during install to load the hard disk drivers for her SATA drive.
I am given a list of adapters I can use:
1 VIA V-RAID Controller Series (Windows XP/SRV2003)
2 VIA V-RAID Controller Series (Windows 2K)
3 VIA V-RAID Controller Series (Windows NT4)
I select Windows XP from these options.
I am met by an error noting:
File \I386\NT5\windraid.sys caused an unexpected error (516) at line 2113 in d:\xpsprtm\base\boot\setup\oemdisk.c.
Press any key to continue
That pretty much ends my attempts to reinstall Windows here.
Suggestions?
I know I have the option of making a slip-streamed install with the driver built into the CD, but would like to avoid this option if possible.
I plugged these errors into Google, and I found one suggestion that the drivers for this motherboard don’t work if the CD-ROM is master on the IDE chain.
The system was:
SATA HDD
IDE CD-ROM running as master
I went ahead and connected an IDE HDD to the chain the CD-ROM is on, and jumpered things such that the CD is the slave on this chain.
Same results.
The motherboard is an MSI KT6V. I got the drivers from MSI’s website.
Is she actually using a RAID, or is she using a single disk in a computer with a RAID controller? I was able to install XP on one of my computers without using any additional drivers just by going into the BIOS and switching all of the RAID options off. Once I did that, Windows assumed it was a normal SATA disk drive interface and loaded without any problem.
This is a common problem, for which a common solution is to go into the BIOS and set the SATA drive to ‘Compatible’ or ‘IDE’ mode. Once you’ve installed Windows, you should be able to install the correct driver and set the BIOS back.
