Problems Upgrading PS3 HDD - Please Help!

Hi Guys,

I’m trying to upgrade my PS3 HDD from the original 40GB drive that came with it to a 320GB drive. The full description is a ‘Western Digital Scorpio Blue 320GB SATA 8MB Cache 2.5 inch internal harddrive’ and was advertised as PS3 compatible.

I have followed the fairly simple online instructions but when I replace the drive and re-boot I get the following error message:

‘no applicable update data was found. insert storage that contains update data of version 2.60 or later, and then press the START and SELECT buttons at the same time.’

and keep just going round in circles. I’m not very clued up when it comes to these things - can anyone help or advise of a UK helpline I could call?

Cheers, Will

Have you tried putting the required update on a USB stick and plugging it in to the PS3? You need to have the right file structure on the USB stick too.

From here “Try creating the folder on your PenDrive or Portable HD called \PS3\UPDATE\ and put the update file in that. It worked for me. Now I have 500Gb to play with… loads of room for all those HD movies.”

I could use some advise. Will a Seagate 500GB Internal serial ATA Hard Drive ST905003N1A work in my PS3? It’s about a 3 month old 40gb model. I’d hate spend the money and find it doesn’t work. I’ve seen various articles which state that 250gb is the limit, and, others that say they’ve installed a 500gb hdd. Can anyone give me a final “yes” or “no” on the Seagate?

I’ve installed a Seagate 500 GB. It works fine. I had to redownload all my downloaded stuff, though.
