Programming a 2000 Ford Focus Keyless Remote

The buttons on my remote are starting to wear. So, this morning I decided to pickup a new one at my local Ford dealer. The parts counter person said to take the remote to a service writer so he can program it while I wait. The service writer tells me that it has to be done in a service a bay and that it will cost $75.00 U.S… That’s on top the $40.00 I already paid for the remote.

I returned RC and got my money back. The question is this. I have seen several websites online that sell remotes (with programming instructions) for the Ford Focus. My car is 2000 ZTS sedan. Has anyone bought a remote online and successfully programmed it?

TIA
Jim

This site seems to imply that you can easily program them yourself

Remotes are $ 23.00

I’m not at work right now(I work at a ford dealer), but I think on a focus you turn the key off and on eight times or maybe eleven times(with the eighth time ending in run). The locks will lock then unlock. You press any button on the transmitter. The locks will lock then unlock showing that you have programmed it. We don’t charge for this. I will get back to you Monday, but you can test it yourself with your old remote. This kind of thing drives me crazy about some dealers. Makes us all look bad.

mike1dog & Astro,

Thanks for the info. I tried Astro’s idea on my existing remotes first and it worked. I did one remote then the second one stopped working, which confirmed the program took. I did it again using both remotes and now they both work. I found a locksmith selling them for $19.00 so I had him order another remote for me.

Thanks again for the help guys
