Projection screen TV help

Help me teeming millions you’re my only hope. I have a 2 year old ceiling mounted projection screen TV. It’s made by Infocus. Yesterday out of the blue the far right 1/8th of the screen dimmed out, it’s not black, just about 10 shades darker then the rest of the screen. Right where it dims there is a line running from the top to the bottom of the screen of slightly distorted color. When I switch the aspect ratio from wide screen to standard the dim goes away but the discolored line stays ( the dimming would start about where the aspect of wide screen starts) Does any one have any ideas what could cause this? I checked the connections and the bulb and they look fine. We only have 3 hours till Heroes starts!

HELP!!!

I can’t help you fix your TV, but “Heroes” will be replayed on Sci-Fi on Friday.

but…but… Big TV… first showing… Heroes… :Sigh:

Stupid technology :frowning:

Thanks for the heads up

You didn’t give much detail about your projector, but judging by your description it’s a single-panel LCD (my second guess would be single-chip DLP, but the description of the problem doesn’t sound like something DLP would do). These projectors work by shining a light through a color wheel, whose rotation is synched with the display on the panel (so when the green segment of the color wheel is in front of the light, the green part of the picture is displayed on the panel, then red, then blue, then cycle repeats). I’m assuming it’s a single panel model since otherwise it would cause an odd hue on the defective part of the panel. It would be extremely unlikely for all three panels to fail the same way at the same time. It also doesn’t sound like a controller failure, because of the line you mentioned.

Unless your projector is still under warranty (unlikely since it’s two years old), most likely, it’s a goner. Repairing (assuming you could get the parts) would cost more than a replacement projector which would almost definitely be superior anyway.

If you can find a repair place around that does free estimates, great; otherwise you’re probably better off finding a new replacement and ebaying this one for the parts.

However, one other thing I would try before giving up is a different signal source. How about connecting your computer to it? Any modern Windows PC or Mac should be able to handle widescreen resolution with no problem.

You might also try posting on AVSForum.com, it’s pretty much the best go-to place for home theater technology.

I have infocus 4805 projector and one of the things that can fail is the light tube. Somebody described it as “I have a brown tint on the right edge of my screen that’s been slowly working its way into my image”. Could this be the problem? I second the advice to do a search on http://www.avsforum.com.

That is exactly what it is!!!

I will check out AVSforum as soon as I get to a computer. ( I do most of my posting from my Blackberry)

All, thank you very much for all of your help. If anyone knows what I shoud do about this before I have a chance to get to a computer your advise wopuld be most appreciated.

I assume you have the 4805. If so, it is the glue that holds the light tube together being affected by the heat. See this post The 2nd Official Infocus 4805 Thread. | Page 346 | AVS Forum In the linked post they refer you to page 226
If you decide to try fix it let me know how it went as I’m starting to get the same problem.

The light tube issue is quite possible the problem; however, the reason I suspected a problem with a panel is that vertical lines (like he mentioned) are very frequent symptoms of failed LCD panels.

Out of curiosity what kind of Blackberry? I used to occasionally post using a BB with a full QWERTY keyboard, but I recently got a BB Pearl and wouldn’t dream of it now.

Sorry to be an absentee OP, but real life kinda kicked in.

For eveyone who helped answer my orginal question I give a huge thank you. I will most Likely just be buying a new one or trying to find someone to fix this. After it took me an hour to put the vacuum cleaner back together today my wife said there is no way in hell I was touching the projector.

I’m also using a Blackberry Pearl, and I would say that more than ¾ of all my posts are from it. What kind of problems are you having posting from your pearl? Is it the key layout or are you having problems with the sites? My only problem is that I spell like a brain damaged monkey on crack, and I don’t think anyone would be able to understand me if I couldn’t put my posts through word first. :stuck_out_tongue:
