High-school prom? I barely remember it. I know I went, because I remember leaving and saying goodbye to people I knew, and how weird that felt. But I went by myself (there was none of this obligatory-date nonsense or limos or anything), and it was just a dance, really.
Of course, that was Whitby, Ontario, in 1981. Things may be different now.
I don’t think my senior prom had a theme. I didn’t have a girlfriend, and ended up asking a girl my sister used to babysit (she was a freshman at the time). I danced maybe two dances with my “date”, and nothing further ever came of it. But even at that, I still had a great time at the prom, just hanging out. High school was a good time for me.
I didn’t go to my prom, or homecoming, or Grad Night, or any high school football games. I was the “angry nerd” in high school, silently resenting all those who had silently ignored me (or worse) for those first 18 years, looking forward to going away to college as if it would be a fresh start in the Witness Protection Program. However, I believe the prom song my year, going along with the lovely high school I attended, was Coolio’s “Gangsta’s Paradise.”
I think our theme was Unchained Melody.
I went with this girl named Sonja I really liked who had dated my friend William some time before. I don’t remember the dance, but we had a really great time hanging out afterwards and one our one (I think) other date. But I was a dweeb and for some inexplicable reason I didn’t call her for a week or so and when I did, I found out her stepmother had gone crazy and tried to kill her, so she moved back to Arkansas with her mom.
We were cooly civil when I saw her about a year and a half later at my friend’s graduation. She assumed that I stopped calling her because I didn’t like her and too much a pussy to tell her, but that wasn’t it at all. I certainly was a chicken-shit, but not 'cuz I didn’t like her.

Heh. I didn’t go to the prom. In fact, I never went to any school events - it was just too uncool back in the late 60’s to do anything so . . . establishment.
But I did get pregnant!
When I read this it sounds like you had other than consensual sex before that night. I hope that’s not the case.
My prom song was Lonestar’s “Amazed.” It was supposed to be “Take My Breath Away” from Top Gun, as that was the song that had been hand-picked by the Student Council types. However, several people who didn’t plan to go to prom split the vote with Rage Against The Machine’s “Guerrilla Radio,” allowing “Amazed” to roll up and overtake “Take.”
I took a friend, to whose advances I was utterly oblivious until recently.
That is the case. But…um, not with my date, if that’s how it sounded. With someone else, years before. I was molested as a child, and it included intercourse. I still consider prom night my “first time”, although I was technically not a virgin.
