Pronounce "Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan"

A friend has to mention this musician’s name in an oral report tonight. Can anyone indicate how to pronounce this?

You want me to pronounce it? OK. I just did. You didn’t hear? Lean close to your monitor and I’ll do it again. There, you must have heard that. No? Maybe you should clean out your ears and ask again.

Sorry, I couldn’t resist. :stuck_out_tongue:

ah-LEE KAHN (Pakistani pronunciation from here)

FAT-eh (General pronunciation from same place)

Couldn’t find anything on Nusrat. I’d guess that I’d say it “Nuszrat”, but I’m UK, have never been to Pakistan and don’t know correct phonetic spellings  .

If you download the videos from his nephew’s Sony site then someone is bound to mention his name (his nephew has the same name with “Rahat” in front of it).

Nusrat = NOOS rat (the “oo” as in “foot”) (the “a” sounds a bit like the “o” in “hot”)
Fateh = fa TEH (“a” as in “fat” only a bit softer, almost a schwa) (take time to pronounce the H)
Ali = Quickly, like “ala” in Chicken ala King, only instead of al’a’ it’s al’i’ (‘i’ as in “bit”)
Khan = as in “Wrath of Kahn.” Almost. If you really wanna get down, the KH will be a sort of vocalized glottal stop. Say “Ick,” and stop the word in the middle of the “ck” part. Your throat is ‘stopped.’ Slowly release the pressure until you are hissing from the back of your throat. That’s the sound you want to use to start the word. Hairball-like, but don’t be gross about it…

PS: What’s he gotta say it for? How many times? If he stresses the right syllables he’s more than 75% of the way to sounding like he knows how to say it.
You don’t *really * start sounDING like a hick until you stress the wrong sylLAbles.

I knew the SDMB would come through. Thanks for the info. I just hope you really do know what you’re talking about, for her sake!
