pronounce Porsche

What is the proper way to pronounce “Porsche,” as in
the automobile?

POR sheh

or

POR shuh

Yup, I agree - it’s a TWO syllable word, emphasis on the first.

As in “The quality of motoring is not strain’d”

Believe it or not there is actually a site with an mp3 of the correct pronunciation of porsche. Will the wonders of the Internet never cease?

heh, because its a German company, if you want to say it the proper German way, say it with the ‘e’ on the end pronounced, like ** tomndebb** said. Ending e’s are pronounced in that language.

Porsche is the engineer’s surname. Surnames are pronounced the way the person whose name it is pronounces or would have pronounced it. Thus, “POR shuh” or “POR sheh” as tomndebb says.

Porsha. There is no substitute.

Porsche: pronounced “Ex-Pen-Siv-Toy”

Punch line from a bad joke in which it’s pronounced “Porsh”:

“That weren’t no Porsh, that was a Ferrari.”

But, then again, who pronounces “Volkswagen” the way it should (Folksvagen)? But, yeah, if yer a stickler for these things, pronounce it with a schwa at the end.

Where do you think you are? We even abbreviate it “Fau Vey”.

This was a joke in the movie A Fish Called Wanda – a joke at the expense of Americans. John Cleese’s character is talking to Jamie Lee Curtis’ about (I think ) Kevin Kline’s:

“I told him my wife’s name was Portia, and he asked why she was named after a car.”

What’s funny about that? I’ve heard of girls named Mercedes.

Arrrrg! This is one of my pet peeves (with a nod to Lisa Lubner whose pet peeve is people who have pet peeves). People who pronounce it “Porsh” think they’re so hip and sophisticated ("ooo, it’s European).

My other pet peeve is people who think a CD isn’t an album.

And what’s funny about that? The car is named after a girl called Mercedes.

Floater beat me to it (it’s hard to keep up with the boards when you’re at the office!).

Mercedes: The car was named after a girl.

Portia: Don’t know where it came from, but it’s a feminine name.

Porsche: The car was named for Dr. Ferdinand Porsche. People who name their kids “Porsche” because other girls are named “Mercedes” haven’t bothered to find out where the names come from. People who name their kids “Porsche” because they’ve heard of women named “Portia” need to go back to second grade to learn about homonyms.

According to http://www.behindthename.com/

It’s the name of Julius Caesar’s wife (the one before Cleopatra, and who was supposed to be “above reproach”). See a good history of Rome, or Shakespeare’s “Julius Caesar”.

Portia was also the name of the wife of Brutus (at least in Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar).
