Pronounciation: Won (one or juan)?

My girlfriend pronounces the word ‘won’ as in “He won the race.” as “juan”… I insist that it’s pronounced “one”. please set her straight because she is infecting her friends.

smootman, please read the descriptions of the various forums. This is not a comment on a Staff Report, so is being moved to General Questions.

Definitely “one”.

wun, with short u as in cut, must, fun

OK, now that the correct factual answers have appeared, I can safely post this:

“How many Spaniards does it take to screw in a lightbulb?”

“Juan.”

Juan won by one run.

Said three times fast.

The won in “won ton” OTOH is indeed pronounced like Juan. Maybe she’s just a Chinese food enthusiast.

And besides, “Juan” is pronounced more like “hwon”.

Dictionary says:

Dictionary.com lists the same pronounciation for ‘one’ (wŭn).

Damn! No wonder that Chinese soup is so heavy.

Unfortunately, won and one rhyme with fun and run. All short u sounds.

You would think that they’re pronounced with a short o and rhyme with con and on. But they don’t.

English spelling. Sux.

Pees.

Is she Korean? The Korean currency is won (“hwon”).
