I grew up in Arkansas, and recall hearing old-timers complain about the ignoble pronunciation that Kansans and certain other “Yankees” gave to our state’s name. But I have never heard anyone actually call it “Ar-kanssus” in real life…
Illinois has the same issue, my cousins from there wince at the mention of “Illin’ noise”. That variant seems to be about as common as the silent ‘s’ prononciation.
