I thought for sure that this thread was going to be about Fauquier County.
Now, here’s another one to ponder.
Pronounce “Kechoughtan”.
Tidewater residents should be able to do it.
(Actually…it’s not THAT hard to figure out)
There’s also the ubiquitous “Powhatan” that pops up here and there all over the state. I’ve never actually gotten a definitive pronunciation on that one, though. (Pow-A-Tan? Pow-Hat-An? Poe-WATT-un?)
And here I am expecting a discussion of Horry County, SC. Pronounced by those of us not born-and-raised Whore-y. Pronounced by the residents as Oar-y. Of course, you’re free to pronounce it any darn way you choose.
Yeah, at work, we have a database that lists all the ZIP Codes in America and this one got passed around for a while. Recently I was working on a project and came across a town called Humptulips. I can’t remember where it is … possibly Minnesota?
I live not far from Loudoun County, VA, and I’ve gotten in the habit of deliberately mispronouncing it as “Low Down” just to be a wiseguy, even though I’m not a Boz Scaggs fan.
