No matter how bad the situation, one can thank supernatural forces for it not being worse.
so all the people that DO die are proof that angels don’t exist? if something is a million to one odds and it happens a million times… it happens once.
No, its not a question of statistics, its a question of common sense. If angels only intervene in manners which can be explained as natural phenomena, then they probably don’t exist. The fact is humans and other mammals can survive in the cold for a long period of time without divine intervention.
If we saw angels carrying the people trapped in the Towers safely to earth, my thinking would change.
And it seems like adding insult to injury to tell the relatives of people who did suffer untimely deaths, “Sorry, dudes, guess the angels didn’t give two expletives about your loved ones.”
You are saying there is no harm in believing a farfetched story without evidence? It’s OK to accept an extraordinary claim without extraordinary proof? I can’t believe I’m hearing this on the Straight Dope message board of all places.
I wouldn’t be surprised if angels really DID show up and keep her warm, but I don’t think there’s any way it could be proven or disproven.
Angels seem to be like UFOs. They know everything, are all powerful, are immensely concerned about us, and yet only show up when there aren’t any reliable witnesses. You’d think just once they’d save somebody in the background of a CNN shot, but no…
Like CNN would publish proof of the existence of angels, laigle.
So, in your theology two angels don’t have the power to prevent the loss of both legs to frostbite?
Why do you suppose CNN would CONCEAL information about angels, Snoop? Some kind of liberal media conspiracy? Whatever. There are no fucking angels. Get over it.
Hey, I’ve got fossil evidence on my side, as well as ice-age migrations and whatnot, all pointing to homo sapiens being pretty tough in survival situations, long before anyone ever thought up angels or wrote bibles involving them or invented pins for them to dance on.
Pah. In what, a week? What waste product angels are these?
Not the point. You said that this specific incident was evidence of evolution. It is not. Stop moving the goalposts.
Her losing her legs and going through this longer ordeal is SO THAT she could inspire people with her miracle, which was the angel’s original plan all along. Yes, they could have saved her earlier, or prevented it from happening, but then she wouldn’t have learned anything.
I am the Wayne Gretsky of Ad hockey!
What did she learn and why is that something she wouldn’t have learned if she was rescued the first day with both of her feet intact (which would also be a bit more convincing, IMHO)?
Hi everyone, BTW!
How would you like to go through life thinking that you were one of God’s children, only to find out that your purpose in life was to be a cheap audio-visual aid for those whom God really cares about, not so much a student but a throwaway lesson for the real students?
Plus, that would have been totally cool—like the Roosevelt Island tram, only with angels!
I have proof of angels.
Those #$%^& took away the 2002 World Series title from the World’s Greatest Baseball Team.
Hi back at you! Hmmmm, he or she is wise but snotty. A good fit!
Don’t you mean those #$%^& took away the ALCS from the World’s Greatest Baseball team?
So what if one person needs to be tortured to make a point to the rest. That’s perfectly acceptable, isn’t it?
That’s what evil dictators do? Huh? No, that can’t be right.
Anyways, there’s a much more detailed version of this story already in the bible. Guy’s name is “Job”. A guy who was tortured in every conceivable way to prove his loyalty.
If your loyalty holds true, you get to have your legs removed. If your loyalty fails, you die.
-Joe, am I not a loving god?
