Propane adaptor question

I recently moved to a new apartment, and they only allow 1 lb propane tanks. I have a high-powered burner outside that I used to hook up to a 20-lb (I think that was the size, it was the standard size, at any rate) Rhino propane tank. Now I want to hook the same setup onto the little 1 lb Coleman propane tanks they sell. There must be an adaptor out there, but I have yet to find one. I asked the local barbecue supply shop, looked in hardware shops, but no luck. I have found that such a thing does in fact exist, but I still don’t know where to buy it from. Since nowhere locally seems to sell it, I’d probably have to get it online somewhere.

This should be a particularly easy question, but for some reason I have been unable to find any information.

Any help would be appreciated.

Check with a refrigeration supply house patronized by professional service crews. Another possibility is a hydraulic hose manufacturing shop.

Here’s a list or two of state-wide suppliers.

I’d recommend contacting the following outfits:
Northaire 408.286.9850

Allied Refrigeration 408.286.7674

Royal Brass 408.297.6642
All of them are extremely helpful. Allied assisted me in replacing the contacter for my 20 mW argon laser. Royal Brass can fabricate just about any sort of adapter hose you can name, whether it be for a Catepillar 'dozer or a welding rig. Give them a call and enquire about colleagues they may have in your area. All three are extremely helpful and professional organizations.

You could use one of these:

I think my local True Value Hardware carries them too. Sometimes there are sold as a “use 1 lb. cylinders if your bulk tank runs out” adaptors.

GaryM, that device actually looks interesting, but it doesn’t look like it is the adaptor I’m looking for. It goes from a 1lb into a 20lb. I need something that goes from 1lb, that makes it identical to the outbound connection of a 20lb tank. So basically, I think it adapts to the wrong side of the 20lb tank connection.

Zenster: Those guys sound like they could do the job, if perhaps they are overkill. Since your area and my area are the same area, I might check it out. My fear is that, as a custom job, this would turn out expensive (more than $20).

You’re right, it goes the wrong way! We need a gender changer, no, that’s computers not propane…

If only Hank Hill was on the board. I bet you could buy a card of 12 of them at a Mega-Lo mart.

Hank would never buy it at the Mega-Lo Mart. He works for Stricland Propane. “Taste the meat, not the heat!”

STRICKLAND! not Stricland!

PIMF!

Avumede, you would be amazed at how economically they might be able to produce your fitting on the spot. They have the jigs and forms right there on the premises. This is something they do all day on a routine basis. It is even more likely that they could order a stock item that required no assembly labor charges at all. Give them a call, if only to find a place that is closer to you. I’ve been going to Royal Brass for 20 years and they have rarely, if ever, let me down.
