I have stayed out of this whole thing 'til now, but I’ve seen this particular bit a few times now and it’s beginning to grate on me. He “came to understanding” that he’d crossed a line he shouldn’t have before he was suspended.

I really object to the language used here: “he’s a better member for it.”

The poster’s initial apology was not acknowledged by the Mods, he got a time-out and now the Mod position is you’ve cured him?

This whole thing smacks of face-saving.

(BTW, this is true of most people who for one reason or another screw up on the board; once they really see the full measure of their actions and understand how it was wrong, the bad behavior never repeats.)

Are you claiming that you showed him the error of his ways? After he’d already apologized in the thread? You had a net sum of zero effect on his behavior.

That’s all we want; we want people to do right here. If they don’t get it until they’re shown some correction, okay, we attempt to guide into better behavior.

Evidently, you are. He got it when he apologized in the thread, not after your “correction”. He didn’t need you to “guide him”. He’d already done quite well on his own.

And yes, the prohibition against abusing staff remains. You can disagree with what we do, you don’t have to love us, you don’t have to like us. But you do have to be civil at the least, the very least.

Speaking of, and back on topic, I realize that none of you know me from Adam, and I don’t have any cites that I care to provide, but giving Moderators a secret Mod-name has never, in my experience, worked very well.

Nightmare would be the term I’d use.

I’m convinced that, if nothing else, the effort to implement mod-only screen names plus the risk of nightmare together outweigh the benefits - which benefits are being pursued without additional language-limiting rules.

As for the suggestion, consider it withdrawn - with this passing commentary: my replies to comments about the suggestion were more testing the objection than advocacy. If it came across as a campaign, i.e. I would be unhappy if the suggestion were not implemented, the fault for that is mine.
