As a lurker/sometime poster I have to say I the the proposition of sharing the [Game] game threads with all of the forums is well worth considering. I don’t have anything against those games, I’ve even played in one or two, but sometimes it is difficult to find a thread with all of the many games taking up the top of the forum. If you split them up, it makes it a lot easier. And, has the added effect of enriching the games by surrounding them with related content. I think it will make better sense for new people visiting the site, as well.
Not that it apparently matters, but I, too, endorse SenorBeef’s proposal. Some of the hyperbole and (understandable) vented outrage aside, his statements have been spot-on.
Unfortunately, the goalposts have been moved and the point has been missed so many times, I doubt it will do any good, but I support him keeping up the good fight.
I don’t think you’re going to get a consensus of the mods in favor of this. Marley doesn’t want them in Cafe Society. Twickster doesn’t want them in MPSIMS and I assume she doesn’t want them in Cafe Society either, since she mods there, too. Idle Thoughts is also a mod in both MPSIMS and the Game Room. I assume he’s fine with the threads in the Game Room and also doesn’t want them in MPSIMS. They need to consider the preferences of the mods who are actually in charge of a particular forum, otherwise you have a result of a lone mod, Dex, tagging threads in the Game Room and the other mods jumping on his back because they hadn’t yet come to an agreement about what to do. Even though Dex’s actions were ultimately vindicated in hindsight.
I wouldn’t sell the mods short. They’re in a bit of an interesting spot here. They are fully aware that there is a problem (even if you don’t think they like Dex’s tags, you can’t deny that they are currently aware). “How to address the problem?”
Standard TubaDiva would be to deny a problem and lock this thread, but I suspect she’s not going to do that. What’s probably is going to happen is the same thing I highly recommend.
No new sub forum. Post padding “games” are either put in the forums they are referencing (for example: Speak to me only in Simpsons Quotes is about TV, which means Cafe Society), or shunted to MPSIMS if they are not quite pointless, or locked for being too stupid to live.
And really, why is “Speak to me in only Simpson’s quotes” even in the Game Room to begin with? It’s not a game. It’s not a thread I have a problem with, but c’mon. It’s a thread about quotes from a TV show.
I too hope this is the eventual outcome (if a new forum is off the table). Ninety-seven pages of post any random word? WTF? How do you even know if someone gives a clever response?
The post padding rule doesn’t apply to The Game Room…it’s only a note in MPSIMS, so that people know that pointless has limits. The Game Room doesn’t have such a limit.
That being said, if you posted a pointless topic in any forum, other than the Game Room, it will probably still get shut down. Even in the Game Room, if you just posted a “Post Padding Party” it might get shut down as not really being a game…
…however, if you wanted to disguise it as a game, even a pointless one–in your opinion–as “Let’s count to a million”, that’s fine.
This has been mentioned before, both by some mods and some posters, but The Game Room was made, specifically, for all of those extra, seen-as-pointless, let’s-get-it-out-of-the-other-forums, stuff that most other people don’t care for or like to see (I’m referring to the board game threads here, not threads like sports or talking about games–those two category of topics just have the luck of being in the same topic genre, thus, they’re in the same forum).
And for the record, I agree with most of you all. I’m one who argued (strongly) for a new forum just for those board game threads alone and I still hope it happens someday.
But when the majority among staff is, “We don’t see the need for a change right now”, that’s the decision that was made. It may not be liked and it may not be agreed with, but that’s what was asked about (originally) and the answer was “no, not at this time”.
As for the new proposals since then (moving to MPSIMS, moving to CS, closing down ones seen as truly pointless by some members), Cochrane put it fairly well in his post above, in post 183.
He said that putting some of them there wouldn’t satisfy anyone. Given how many people are getting behind putting the appropriate ones there, I suspect he’s re-evaluating, and figure we ought to give him and others time to do so.
Where is the limit, Idle Thoughts? Please explain to me how a thread asking for posters to run through the alphabet is something other than an exercise of “let’s see how long this thing lasts”?
To be honest, tl;dr. BUT
Thread based games have as much right in the Game Room sub forum as do conversations about games, sports, and gaming. It’s in the name. It’s called the Game Room. Games are played in Game Rooms. Conversations are held in Game Rooms. They both have equal reason to be in this sub-forum.
If anything, sports-related threads should have their own sub-forum, since sports fans can be very vocal and at times very, let’s just say, colorful in their expressiveness.
Thread based games do NOT belong in MPSIMS because they are NOT pointless. They are games, they belong in the Game Room.
“Yeah, but screw those people” is at the root of most of the wars going on right now, and in most of history.
Can you explain why your UX is so greatly diminished because this thread exists? And why mine isn’t diminished by all the threads on NFL football, which I think is one of the most colossal wastes of money, time and societal potential in the western world?
Yeah, uh, belay that.
One more reason I should spend more time elsewhere. Mods, y’all are handling this in a lousy fashion.
I’d like to add (but the edit window will have closed by the time I’m done) all of you who are miffed that the thread-based games make it difficult to find your discussion threads: Imagine that the first page of the forum was 70% discussion threads and a bunch of thread-game loving Dopers complained that they couldn’t find the cool thread-game threads because you Discussers were taking over the forum. When the tglDopers propose that discussion threads belong in a different forum, how would you feel?
anyrose, fer pity’s sake, read some of the posts in this thread. Games work differently from normal discussions. If situations were reversed, the games would STILL be at the top, based on how they work.
I estimate theres only about 5 thread game loving Dopers in total. You see it when all the thread games get bumped to the top, its the same poster who has posted the last post in all of them.
When those five posters propose that they need a different forum I would agree with them, they do indeed need a sub forum for their games.

:dubious:
I would recommend that you do read the thread. There are several strong arguments presented in favour of the proposition, but it has since been abandoned. If you do want to just randomly jump in and participate without reading the whole thread, please at least read posts 149 and 158, which summarize the current proposals that are under discussion.
What about this:
[game]
Umm… I don’t know what my “UX” means.
Also, if you’re this angry about NFL football, maybe you shouldn’t go to a forum whose stated purpose includes sports. And by the way, I’m not a huge fan of the NFL, either. I like college. War Eagle.
Speak to me in only Science Fiction.
According to current placement, one of these threads is a game, while the other is not and belongs in Cafe Society. Could you please elaborate on the distinction?
Also, it’s hard to give any credence to your position when you admit you haven’t even read the posts.
