hello fellow dopes!
ok: why is it that the plum is considered by most to be a fairly innocous fruit, whereas the prune (which is just a dried out plum) is the most dangerous food on the planet? i mean, i even hold my breath when there are prunes in the immediate vicinity, lest i inhale anything that might activate my anal canal.
raisins are no more dangerous than grapes. astronaut food can be eaten with few side effects. but prunes are a recipe for a disaster of diarhiffic proporations.
does anyone know what the heck is up with that?
thank you most sincerely, even if you are as clueless as me : )
ahhh prunes - nature’s best laxative! I guess it has something to do with the concentration of natural fibre etc. during its drying/breakdown process. Could it be some type of fermentation?
I once worked in a nursing home where the speciality of the day was “poo food” which they spooned on top of porridge for breakfast. It consisted of mashed up prunes, natural bran and pineapple juice. You’d think this would have been a natural disaster waiting to happen - yet it was a very gentle way of “stimulating” bowel movement.
Urghh…can’t believe I’m talking about this
It’s not just fiber. Other fiber-rich foods do not have such powerful and immediate effect. Also, prune juice, which is nearly fiber-free, also works. Prunes contain a laxative chemical called dihydroxyphenyl isatin. But as to why fresh plums don’t have the same effect, I can’t say. See constipation
