Don’t believe the eBay listings unless you can confirm actual payment. On many such high publicity listings, there are dudes who register just to make fake bids.

In fact, on most of the completed auctions for the Ps3, either the Ps3 was “no sold” or had a high bidder who was a newbie and/or negative FB or “NARUed”.
I also saw several “not sold” with prices as low as $600. I saw some sold for as little as $267.
The stories of dudes getting $1000+ are mostly bogus. Those looking for a “quick buck” and selling their unit on eBay for thousands are mostly going to have to file a NPB.
I agree. I’m thinking about emailing the 25 people on Craigslist in a couple days to see inquire if they’ve sold their $1600 PS3 yet. Could be an interesting experiment. I’m guessing that not a one will have sold.
$267? Got a cite for that? You can’t buy them for less than $400 IIRC.
Personally if I get anything soon it will be an XBox360. I didn’t realize it had been out so long, many games are around $20 now.
Well, all you have to do is search “completed listings” on eBay and do it by amount, and then get to the middle figures. I saw a sale for that amount- completed. How likely it is that the seller will deliver is another point entirely, but he had a rating of around 80 or something. Every sale I saw for amounts over $1000 seemed to have a buyer who was suspicious as hell to me. Mind you, there was soemthing like 20,000 listings so I only looked at a few.
I’ll get one when the price goes down.
I was at the launch party in San Francisco, covering it for the media network I work for. I’ll give Sony this - they certainly know how to hype things up. If Sony decides to send my network the units they promised us to review on, I’ll have one for free, but other than that, I’m not getting one until it’s more affordable. I mean, shit, I didn’t get a PS2 until they’d gone down to $120, like a year ago - and I LOVE PS2 games. Although the fact that the PS3 would essentially replace everything in my entertainment center is kind of nice - Blu-Ray I can do without, but the DVD feature and the media center I like the idea of.
When I wrote my review of it, I stated that the PS3 is for hardcore gamers. Don’t get me wrong, I think it’s overhyped, too. But the features they built into it are something only people who forgoe food, sleep and sex for gaming would appreciate. If you’re a casual gamer (like, you take regular intervals to sleep, and don’t wear adult diapers during gaming marathons) go for the Wii or the 360. If you get laid on a regular basis, the PS3 is not currently for you. …Besides, the Wii is prettier.

I have it on reasonably good authority that a friend of a friend got $1200 cash for his in person. So now you know: Some guy on the internet said that a friend of a friend got $1000+. It’s verified PS3-mania!
Yeah $1000 to $1200 is happening. People expected to make a lot more though, and that’s why the lines started forming on Tuesday and Wednesday for the Friday launch. Of course, because so many people bought 'em just to sell 'em, the prices dropped quick. A friend of mine spent two nights in the cold (under 40F) to get a PS3 and second controller (around $700). His first auction on eBay didn’t get any bids (he started it at $1600). He then tried Craigslist and found someone that offered $1100, but eventually flaked out. He tried eBay one more time and got $1000.
Over 30 hours in line for $300? No thanks.
Indeed. Well done.
Well, obviously, some PS3s sell for more than others.
Yeah, I’m suprised eBay let that one slide. It’s about as obvious as can be that “the seller ended this listing early to sell to the high bidder(s) at current bid price.” Of $9.99 because someone offered him an off-eBay payment of much more.
With any luck, the guy will get Nigerian-scammed into losing both his PS3 and money on a bogus money order.
Come to think of it, why the hell am I so negative. That’s schadenfreude, that is.
