Public Access stories/advice

So here’s the deal. My buddy and I started a video podcast a couple months ago about horror movies. It’s taken off in ways we never expected it to, so we’re taking the leap from our previous “2 guys on a couch” approach and into a more professional environment.

Our first step was to call a local studio with some state-of-the-art equipment set up for this use. It’s way, way, way, way out of our budget.

Our next step is to call the public access place and ask a ton of questions, but figured I’d ask for some “real life” experience from the teeming millions before I make that call.

We’d like to build our own set and simply use them as a place to record our show. We don’t even care if it airs on the public access channel, although if they’d take it, that would be an added bonus.

Anyway, our last resort is to build a “DIY TV studio” in my basement. This would be expensive and be a hassle, but it is an option.

But until then, give me your public access experiences!

They’ll take it; public access is first come, first served. If you have a tape, they have to air it in any unused timeslot.

Is that true for ANY type of material? Our show is probably PG-13 in nature, but it is about horror movies, so there’s open discussion of nudity, blood, gore, guts, violence, etc…

wasson, I know two folks who did this already - Rob Sherman (you NW Burb people will recognize him - he’s a nutball, but I can talk to him) - and Dan and Hippie (you NW Burb people may remember Dan and Hippie from 10 years or so ago - SEEYA!) - if I can get a hold of them, I’ll shoot you an email, ok?

Forgot to add - Sherman’s show was - er - hard to explain - he’s an atheist and rants and raves. Dan and Hippie did local stuff - they thought they were tres cool and hung out at the Stadium, lived in Walden off Algonquin - they were supposed to be “hip”.

That’d be great if you could hook me up with them! I’d love some first-hand experiences of working in a public access studio, censorship, etc.

Seriously, Ray Lyman. You could do an expose on the failure of the public school system.
