One of the things I liked about wintering in GA this past several months, aside from avoiding a Utah winter, was proximity to Publix grocery stores. They have a great coupon policy, they have a couple dozen Buy One Get One Free (BOGO) items every week, they carry Woodchuck hard cider and best of all are their store brand items.
Someone who really knows how to manipulate people’s emotions to make them buy things designed the packaging for these puppies and could probably control my mind if they really tried.
Want bags for your kitchen garbage can? While the capacity in gallons is shown on the box, so is the size of dog that could peer in the can - when I was single I bought beagle-sized bags; married we buy wiemeraner.
Their marshmallows are shown as stick-snowmen, their fudgesicles are airplanes.
The piece-de-resistance for me, and what I’ll miss the most when I go back to Utah soon is their diet soda in 2 liters. They use Splenda, not aspartame. No other store brand I’ve ever seen uses Splenda in their soda. Also, the 2 liter’s usually .89 but is often also a BOGO item.
Publix is employee-owned and has never had a layoff - that’s the cherry on top.
Anyone else love Publix?
I love that they gave away free re-usable shopping bags today for Earth Day.

Their prices are too high for me so I usually go to the Walmart Neighborhood Market for my staples. Winn-Dixie did a nice makeover of their store near me but you have to have their tracking card to get the sale prices. Sweetbay used to be OK but lately they are jacking up their prices as well. I do miss the spacious Krogers and Giant Eagles from up north.
O I heart. The best thing about Publix store brands, even better than the adorable packaging, is that twice I have called with quality issues about them. Once I felt the strawberry jam was too pithy and once there were an awful lot of foreign objects in my black beans (more than the usual occaisional rock.) Both times somebody called me back from a factory floor very concerned about my issue. Which is not to say that they’re usually of bad quality - instead, that Publix has always sought after my feedback so strenuously that I thought they’d like to know.
I just made a thread in CS complaining about Publix milk.
Of course, that could be a greater issue of American Milk, in general. I remember we used to shop at some other grocery store whose name eludes me (it’s now closed down), with the same issue: the 2% tasted like homogenized milk!
I do. I love them. The BOGOs are great, and so is their Greenwise brand stuff.
You know, when they opened a new store here in December they gave stuff away at the door for 3 weeks - I’ve never seen that anywhere!! Day one I got a free re-usable bag, two weeks later a gift basket of bath items. Who else does that??
We have a newer Kroger here in middle GA that’s huge; maybe there are older stores where you are? Our one Winn-Dixie closed down but I still have the ‘Check’ card.
That’s really something, I had no idea their give-a-damness was so high!
I use powdered milk since I only need it for cereal; the Publix brand is separated into pouches that each make one gallon, very handy.
There’s a link from iheartpublix.com to a lady who takes her coupons and Publix sales/BOGOs and makes a shopping list where you can get the most food bank preferred items for the money in order to donate when you have more than you need on hand. On the other hand, I love being the coupon fairy at Publix.
They also have a couple of clubs on their website you can sign up for to get store coupons you can stack w/ manufacturer’s coupons; Baby Club and Pet Club. Aside from the coupons for specific items they throw in ones for produce, meat, dairy and bakery.
And people say the prices are too high at Publix, but the store sales are great - something is ALWAYS BOGOF, and in South Carolina that means if you buy one you still get the discount. I don’t think it’s any more expensive than anywhere else if you’re shopping sales, and their generic products are way, way better than what other places have.
Plus once you get used to Publix all the other grocery stores are dirty. I can’t even go into the Piggly Wiggly anymore.
shudders at the memory of Piggly Wiggly in Macon
Publix has some of the best deli sandwiches around IMO, and their produce is better than most other grocery stores I have been to. I can’t seem to find any grocery stores in Houston that are comparable in quality AND price.
Also, they must have people watching up on catwalks with rifles or something because the Publix cashiers are always friendly and never act like it’s some huge burden to check out your groceries. The one I go to at least twice a week can stop carding me now, though, okay? I’m 31 years old! I can buy beer! I buy beer a LOT!
One of the very few things I miss about living in Florida is Publix. I loved their bakery - the pumpernickel raisin bread was worth killing for! And their store brand premium ice cream was also really good.
But mostly the bakery. The cakes, the pies, the pastries… <drool>
Yes, how could I neglect to mention Publix brand mango sherbet?? It’s a favorite thing for my husband and I to enjoy; always have to buy two containers so no one loses a finger.
Most dangerous BOGO item for me - the cocktail shrimp ring they always have around a holiday. One for lunch, one for dinner and my cholesterol’s through the roof.
I haven’t shopped in a Publix since I moved to Las Vegas back in 1996, but I used to freaking love their White Mountain Loaf bread. Every Sunday morning I’d stop at Publix and get a loaf and eat it with cream cheese and a big ol’ jug o’ (fat free) milk. Best damn bread ever.
All non-skim milk is homogenized, including 2%. Are you actually wanting milk that you have to shake up, or did you use the wrong word? The only thing I can think you are saying is that it tastes like whole (3%) milk.
I do all my grocery shopping at a Publix that is one mile from my house.
Heh. Mine is less than a mile.
I love Publix, too. Their policy of letting you get one BOGO item for half price ROCKS!
One of my fond childhood memories is the Cookie Club at Publix, where kids would get a card and you could get one free cookie every week from the bakery. I’ve got no idea if they still do that, these days.
I don’t shop much at Publix anymore - I use mostly a combination of Walmart and BJ’s Wholesale. Believe it or not, Walmart’s store brand items are usually surprisingly good, too. I’ve found that I often like Walmart brand products better than the name brand ones.
