It’s entitled, curiously enough, FIGURES OF PUN by B.J. Ramey, and I thought you might like to wrestle with some of the bolded answers.
Some television talk shows? MMMM
Stiffens up? CCCCCCCCCC (Baffled by this one and I’ll be embarrased when you answer it.).)
Forty-____? NNNNNNNNN (Too easy.)
World’s waters? CCCCCCC (Ditto.)
Watergate era? TTTTTTT
Generation X time? TTTTTTTTT
Domingo and Pavarotti? RRRRRRRRRR
And off I go to a Doctor’s appointment.

MMMM = “forums”
CCCCCCCCCCCC = tenses
DOmingo = “ten-ors”
gen-x : 90’s

It’s either tenses (ten c’s) or just seize (c’s)

I copied the C’s wrong.
But, shouldn’t your “forty” clue be
"forty- " RRRRRRRRR
as in fort nine-r’s not, forty nine-ens
But “sieze” wouldn’t match the tense (heh) of the clue, would it?
Merl Reagle usually has some fun and interesting variations with playing off the letters like that.
These are pretty cool.
Some television talk shows? MMMM
Forums (4 M’s)
Stiffens up? CCCCCCCCCC (Baffled by this one and I’ll be embarrased when you answer it.).)
Not sure on this one…there are 10 of them, so I guess it means “tenses”
Forty-____? NNNNNNNNN (Too easy.)
49’ers (should be R’s and not N’s, as noted above)
World’s waters? CCCCCCC (Ditto.)
Seas
Watergate era? TTTTTTT
80’s (eight T’s)
Generation X time? TTTTTTTTT
90’s (nine T’s)
Domingo and Pavarotti? RRRRRRRRRR
Tenors (10 R’s)
And off I go to a Doctor’s appointment.
Hmmm…

I’d go with “seven seas” and “seven-ties” for Watergate era.
Whoops, yeah you are right.
