But that was precisely the message of the PB&J reference; that there are cultural differences among the students.
Yes, you have a point, but personally I think the balance has tipped way to far in the other direction, probably as a consequence of (in two parent families) both parents often having a full-time job and as a consequence less time to spend on their children.
A friend of mine from school is a teacher, he likes the job apart from the constant struggle to maintain discipline in the classroom. He told me of a parent teacher meeting he had once (paraphrased) when the parents of ‘little Johnnie’ came in an irate state with him, “Little Johnnie is rude and ill-behaved, he won’t listen to us and stays out to all hours, we don’t know what he’s up to…what are you going to do about it?”
He says that attitude isn’t uncommon. Its not a teachers job to inculcate good manners, discipline and respect for others into a child. That’s the parents job.
Rat turds.
I think you missed the point. Most first and second generation immigrants have ties to the food service industry. Go to a Chinese restaurant sometime (especially one in a non-Asian area). Not only only are there Asian immigrants or second generation Asian Americans in the front of the house, but Hispanics or other first and second generation immigrants in the kitchen. Are you telling me that their children, being American educated, watching and listening to American entertainment don’t know what a sandwich is?
What I’m trying to say is to give the kids some credit. If you find that you’re teaching over their heads, back up and explain the terms.
The white bread makes it racist. When’s the last time your kid ate PB&J on wheat??
When other idiots stop paying attention to them (aka never).
They need to be careful with that too. Food for thought isn’t well-known in some cultures.
I had peanut butter and jelly in a pita yesterday. I don’t know what the hell that makes me.
Imagine that - I’d lived all my life without ever realising there was such a thing as a ‘list of racist foods’, but now I know. Now I know.
My coping strategy will be to not give a fuck about such a stupid idea as a list of racist foods.
Tssk, PBJs aren’t racist, that’s just reading too much into foodstuffs, silly journalists.
Of course, they are symbols of oppressive American global hegemonic imperialism!
