Sure I have. Is it typical to cache stuff in newspaper boxes?
OK, things are getting interesting!
Inside the Metro box there was a ziplock bag taped to the underside of the lid, and inside that was a jewel case, and inside that was a CD (or DVD). It’s got a black label with “7HR33” in white lettering. I’ll be putting it in my old PC (unconnected from the Net) and let you know what happens.
Oooh, I didn’t want to go messing around with other people’s newspaper stuff. This is interesting.
But the weird thing is, now that Telemark has taken the bounty, anyone else who tries wouldn’t find anything. That kind of sucks. But at least you got one of the four.
I can always put it back when I’m done.
I’m gonna guess that 7HR33 is going to mean THREE. Or I am going to guess that I am stating the painfully obvious.
Heh. Cool. I withdraw my earlier comment.
The CD had a PDF file, called 7HR33.pdf and the CD was labeled 7HR33 0f f0UR. It looks like one quarter of a larger image, with encoded text. I’m sure you’ll need to assemble all four to decode it. Drop me a PM and I’ll send you a pointer to the file.
I can also put the CD back tomorrow.
That’s so cool. Could anyone hosts the file?
I can host the images on my site if people want to see it. But without the other three I think it’ll be hard to decode.
Would you host it? I can then send the link to my followers on Twitter.
Where are the Dopers in the other cities to check the newspaper boxes there?
It’s not to far out of my way to pop by Jo’s this afternoon. If I find something I’ll let you know.
San Francisco here.
That is indeed the Mission District. I must say, I’ve never seen that “MEMENTO” newspaper box before, but the SF Weekly next to it is fairly common to see (it’s much like the Reader). I don’t know if I’ll be making it out there anytime soon (we San Franciscans never like going more than six blocks away from home) but I’ll see what I can do.
BTW, How fucking awesome is the Internet that we can do this?
I found nothing of note in the boxes in Austin. Maybe someone beat me to it.
Nothing in the SF boxes. The Momento box would be most plausible, since it’s a Spanish Yellow Pages book and therefore not so frequently used. The Examiner is a daily, and the Weekly just released their über-popular Best of SF issue, so if it was in one of those it was probably taken. There’s nothing on any of the boxes hinting at anything special, though.
That’s a bummer. I’ll put the CD case back in place here tomorrow morning. Was there any evidence that something had been taped to the underside of the lid on those?
Well, sometimes create microcaches using little magnetized containers and affixing them to metal things like newspaper boxes, but my comment had more to do with the fact that very very often multistep puzzle caches are afflicted with missing clues because they are placed in poorly thought out locatations, such as newspaper boxes.
There was no evidence on the Momento box. I even took a bunch of the books out to see if anything had been taped to the back or sides. The Examiner box lid had been messed with, but it looked more like someone kicked it from the outside than anything else. No sign of recent tampering on the Weekly box either.
One of my followers in Austin claims he found the CD there. I asked him to post it but haven’t received a reply.
Here’s the PDF from the CD in Austin: http://foible.net/F0UR.pdf
