Puzzle: "Plan B" Movies

This puzzle is a selection of fifteen movie titles. The titles have been broken into doublets, and the doublets alphabetized.

^^^^^
Example:*

INTOLERABLE CRUELTY
IN TO LE RA BL EC RU EL TY
BL EC EL IN LE RA RU TO TY

^^^^^

Problems:

  1. Usually with this type of puzzle the movie titles have something in common. However, the movie titles here did not have a common factor. But no matter. I have a “Plan B” for such situations. In this case that plan called for adjusting each title ever so slightly and… voila! Now there are common factors.

  2. Once the common factors were established, the common factors themselves were replaced by the appropriate “Plan B”. It was only then that the titles were broken into the doublets.

  3. There is an extra doublet in every title but one. These extra doublets are not part of the altered titles at all. In exactly one title, there is no extra doublet. Instead, there is an extra single letter added to the end of the title.

Mitigating Circumstance:

The extra letters, beginning with the one single and then reading down the doublets (going back up to the top after #15) will yield a quote by…well, I bet you can guess who said it. If you can’t, Google can be your “Plan B”.

Can you find the original titles and the quote?

  • I had intended to use “Intolerable Cruelty” as part of the puzzle. However, after adjusting for the common factor, I couldn’t figure out what the appropriate “Plan B” should be. Perhaps some extremely bright doper could tell me.

This was a fun one!
Quote: “The future will be better tomorrow”, Dan Quayle:

SHAKES THE CLOWN
POLICE ACADEMY4 CITIZENS ON PATROL
ADDAMS FAMILY VALUES
TARANTULA
SWEET HOME ALABAMA
HUSH HUSH SWEET CHARLOTTE
OUTRAGEOUS FORTUNE
THE OVER THE HILL GANG
THE WILD ONE
GUARDING TESS
QUARTERBACK PRINCESS
DOG DAY AFTERNOON
MONKEY BUSINESS
TINKER TAYLOR SOLDIER SPY
BREAD AND TULIPS

And Tyler had no Veep, else we’d have inTYLERable cruelty…

Way to go, EristicKallistic!

I wondered if anyone would get this puzzle without a little more back-up help. But you were the success…or! Congratulations!

By the way, can anyone come up with a movie that would fit “Nixon”? Other than movies with Nixon actually in the title (Frost/Nixon, Nixon) I couldn’t do it. Kept me up for a whole night with no luck.

Indeed, the only other president I could find another example for was the other Adams, JQA. You would think “Arthur” wouldn’t be hard either, but…
