I’ve heard of a really difficult crossword puzzle called ‘Mead’s Meadow’ or ‘Meadow’s Mead’ - I think the concept was that the answers to some clues were integral to the solution of other clues. I can’t find any reference to the puzzle anywhere…
I remember one called Dog’s mead, which was a numeric crossword. It was on the puzzles page of an actuarial magazine that I read many years ago. Perhaps you’re thinking of this?
Here’s a link to the Dogs mead puzzle I mentioned earlier.
Thank-you so Much… that’s the one! I had a sentimental reason for trying to find it because my Dad told me about it when I was about 10 but he passed away a few years ago and I had no other point of reference. Those Actuaries have a keen sense of fun don’t they…
Quite a few crossword magazines still have similar puzzles, although with neither the character or the emotional sognificance of the one linked above. I remember that one company (maybe Dell) runs them under the name “Figure Logic.” They’re good fun, and I’m not even an actuary!
**xenonymous ** - I hope you enjoy solving Dog’s mead. When I first saw it I remember spending quite a bit of time working it out when I should have been doing other, more important things - like studying for my actuarial exams!
Cunctator - I really enjoyed grappling with Dog’s Mead… although I had to have a little sleep in this morning to recover. Glad to know you aren’t reading actuarial magazines just for the fun of it!
Just kidding - I bet there’s some pretty interesting stuff in those mags.
