Q about The Day the Earth Stood Still remake (possible spoilers)

I haven’t seen the new version so rather than spend money to rent it and slog through it, I’ll just ask here. I was wondering if the movie ever addresses something I just thought of: I understand that in the new version Klaatu is here to chide humanity for committing ecocide. What I want to know is, does the movie ever explain where Klaatu’s ancestors got THEIR technology from? Did they have to ruin a world to get where they are now, and if so isn’t it a little hypocritical of them to lecture anyone else?

No.

Yes.

That is a very good question, does advanced technology require the learning process of a industrial period that spew pollutants in the air? I would think so, I doubt they went from hunter gatherers to advanced technology in one step.
I can see it now “Og stop banging on the rock to make a wheel- Aa just made a semi-conductor using twine and tree bark”

I’ve still yet to see any evidence that any high-tech is necessarily eco-friendlier than lower tech. You might save on some materials, but the composition of the materials change and, many times, it’s more toxic than the replacement.

For example, newspapers vs. computers. Many people argue that computers are de facto more eco-friendly than newspapers “because all these newspapers end up in landfills”… but then, newspapers don’t require electricity/lithium-ion batteries in order to be useful, nor do they contain the whole host of toxic materials found in computers. And before people chime in saying “but I know organization X that ships old computers to African villages!”, all you’re really doing is eventually filling up African landfills with old computers.
