Q about vitamin D2 and D3

I recently had a full blood panel done, with everything being fine!

I wondered about vitamin D levels, since I’m 40 now and trying to make sure I have all my ducks in a row for a 40-year-old woman, and it didn’t cost any extra to have it added to the screening. I avoid the sun as if I’m allergic to it, so I’ve been taking vit D3 supplement - there’s no way I’m getting enough sun to make my own vit D.

So the difference between D2 and D3? My googling hasn’t really given me an answer that’s plain enough for my tiny brain, apparently. My total level was 53. The language in the test seemed to say as long as the total level was within normal limits that was all that really mattered, but lower down it does differentiate between D2 (<4) and D3 (53), so is it just differentiating between supplements and natural manufacture? And does it really not matter as long as one of them is making the total “normal?”

IRRC:

D3 is the ‘animal’ form of D, and the exact same nutrient that is produced in the upper layers of your own skin due to sun exposure. D3 supplements are usually derived from deep sea fish. It is a fat soluble vitamin, stored in fat and needs fat in your digestive tract in order to be put to use in the body.

D2 is found in vegetation(and fungus, and some other beings but I forget which). It requires further processing by a mammal’s body to convert it the the usable form, D3.

I have no idea what this has to do with the breakdown of your test score. D3 is what really matters I would say. 53 is perfect, keep doing what you are doing!
