Q for Observant Jewish Dopers.

Sorry guys, this is fairly trivial.

Does the prohibition against using the true name of God extend to gentiles?

I was listening to a christian song which uses “yahweh” in its lyrics.

Is this offensive?
Disrespectful?
Wrong?

Or OK, because we don’t know better, and don’t have to follow all the rules?

I’d appreciate your input.

As far as I know, the prohibition against using that pronounciation in a non-cursing way is not amongst the seven Noahide commandments, so it ought to be OK.

Although perhaps zev, Red or Izzy know more than I do about the specifics of this.

In short there are seven commandments that apply to non-Jews. The only one of which involves uttering the Divine name is the prohibition against blasphemy. This involves only one specific sentence, which I doubt you have uttered.

However, even though technically permitted, I would probably consider it disrespectful. (I personally find it hard to fathom how people so casually use “Jesus” as a explicitive and would never do so myself.)

thanks guys.
much appreciated.
i like to know where i stand on these things

Is this the sentence uttered in Job?

Nope. Nor will I state what it is on these boards.

Zev, now I’m curious - what are the other six commandments that apply to non-Jews?

  1. No Idolatry
  2. No Cursing G-d
  3. No Murder
  4. No Theft
  5. No Forbidden Sexual Relationships (Incest, Bestiality, etc)
  6. No Eating Limbs From Live Animals
  7. Establish Courts and Laws to Fulfill the Other Six

I’m sure others on the board can correct these.

No need to. You hit it right on the head.
