Qadgop or Chief, wherefore art Thou? Strobing into consciousness.

I am hoping that either of you - or anyone else - might be able to answer this question:

When a person is “coming into consciousness” (or “coming online” as I like to describe it) there is very often a sort of “strobing” sensation. Wha, wha, wha, wha…

What is this? Can you explain this mechanism from a biological or psychological standpoint?

Thank you both, and anyone else who might have something to offer. I’ve always wondered about this.

Just to clarify - this is the sensation you experience when you have been knocked out, or are exceedingly drunk, and you finally “come to.” Thanks.

Just a WAG, because I’m not quite clear on what you’re describing, but I’m guessing it’s awareness of one’s heartbeat.

Wow, thanks for the quick reply, Qadgop… you must be up early doing the 'rounds

The heartbeat you mention; I’m not sure is exactly what I’m looking for. It’s a kind of a strobing sensation that’s in the head. Hmm. Perhaps it could be an awareness of the blood circulating? There’s sort of a hum that is associated with it. I’ve experienced it several times after blacking out (non-alchohol related), and it’s sort of a fading into consciousness.

You could be right. I’m interested if others have experienced it, and know what I’m gettting at.

Thank you!
