Hunter-gatherers don’t place a high priority on reproduction, because a woman has to nurse for four years, due to the diet H/G people obtain. Hunter-gatherers basically work to stay in positive caloric balance. If a woman is nursing, and she has another child, she may have to abandon the newborn, because nursing two would cause her to starve to death in many cases.
H/G populations usually remain in balance, reproducing enough for replacement value only. This may be because the few left are confined to the parts of the world that the agriculturists either didn’t want or haven’t taken over yet, but we can probably assume H/G peoples did not reproduce successfully very much beyond replacement value when they were universal.

What I expect is that homosexuality became taboo at the same time as agriculture came about. Because agriculture requires lots of free laborers-er, children-to work the fields.
We are known to have started being agriculturists about 10k years ago. I actually suspect that it started earlier than that, but we either haven’t found the evidence yet, or the evidence wasn’t preserved.
So, homosexuals would have contributed to overall group survival in H/G societies by either hunting or gathering, but not adding to the pool of children needing to be fed. So, they still would have helped contribute to overall group survival-and remember, we ARE a pack (societal) species. Their genes would still go on in the genes of the other members because this IS a family group we’re talking about here. So, the genetic predisposition to gayness would not be selected against.
It’s only when we all adopted agriculture that gay people’s lack of fecundity became a problem.
