I use sa dating app (on my laptop) - not one of the “international” ones such as Tinder, POF etc.
Somebody contacted me with a short message - like an inside joke based on something on my profile to which I responded with a smiley face to show I was delighted they got the reference (not something very many people in this country would be familiar with).
They responded by sending a dynu.com site slash my usename jpg. I scanned the link with an online scanner and then opened it in a private window. The jpg is a QR code, and I am now wondering if I should scan it with my phone.
The user doesn’t seem to be online right now so hasn’t responded to my cutesy reply along the lines of “my mummy and daddy told me to never open links from strangers”.
Maybe they were showing off … their technical prowess.
If they respond to the cutesy message I sent before I checked the link, I will try to find out more.
@Darren_Garrison Could be because I am just drinking my first morning coffee, but why did you link to a QR code in Imgur?
@Darth_Sensitive Possibly for the same reason I cannot parse your post, do you mean that scanning the code would give the guy the ability to see when people click through to it?
Anyway, I used the site that Running Coach provided, and it was a seemingly innocuous message. The guy responded to my message and said that he was just “continuing our previous ‘coded’ communication” (meaning the not very common for these parts reference).
By that time I had stumbled upon a second, almost identical profile of his and asked about it, to which he replied that he had let his membership expire - so wasn’t able to initiate communication with anybody, and since the site was running a half-off offer a few days ago (which it was) he decided to make a new profile and would be deleting the old one.
As you might imagine, I am wary of continuing communication at this point but will wait to see how it plays out.
@Darren_Garrison, weird thing to do. Post a QR code just after we’ve been warning someone not to open QR codes from strangers.
I decoded this one. I’ll bet D_G wrote the text here:
“QR codes can contain a substantial amount of plain text as well as URLs. Maybe it is a small test to see if you pass. Maybe they mistook you for their contact and it contains the secret plans for the terrorist attack or the bitcoin number for all the stolen loot. Or maybe it was a way to get around board moderation rules, you elderberry-smelling half-hamster.”
