Why is (are?) they called Mechanics?
Where’s the mechanical aspect? Why not Quantum Physics for example? Or Quantum Science? Mechanics seems to me like an engineering study.
A minor question to be sure, but…?
As an analogy to “Newtonian Mechanics”. For a long time the physics of “what moves where in such a system” has been known as mechanics, and quantum mechanics is and extension of that usage.
That’s pretty much it. And let’s remember that a lot of times it’s also often called “Quantum Physics”.
Of course. with QM we could envision it having two names at the same time.
This makes sense to me. But, Could QM have, say, 1000 names at the same time?
After all it is Quantum Mechanics!
It’s an extension of the ‘mechanical’ strand of physics, it deals with point particles rather than fields; also it’s formulation comes straight from the Lagrangian then Hamiltonian formulation of Newtonian mechanics.
Well, in addition to Quantum Mechanics, there’s Quantenmechanik, Mecánica cuántica, Mécanique quantique, Mekkanika kwantistika, Meccanica quantistica, Mekaniks na kwantum, Mechanika kwantowa, குவாண்டம் விசையியல், 量子力学, and over 80 more.
I’m sure top quantum linguists are even now working on increasing that number.
Oh, scientists have lots of names for QM. Especially after a few drinks.
Nowhere near theoretical mechanics.
