This month’s Discover magazine has an article on quantum theory. The article mentions that without quantum theory cell phone’s wouldn’t work. This is stated without further clarification or explanation. Could someone here clarify and explain?

All solid state electronic circuitry works by applying quantum mechanics to make things like transistors and diodes. Without these components it is impossible to make a cell phone. The radio waves and such are still understood as classical electro magnetism.
