Quarantine Entertainment Freebies and Early Release Things

Thanks for that update. It might prove useful at the weekend.

HBO is streaming a lot of stuff for free

I just want to point out that it is a first run movie. The only reason it is streaming is because of the virus. Now, I’m not sure how much it is for a first run movie ticket where you are but around here that price may be a little high but competitive. Now, when you consider that everybody in your house can watch it, and you’ll get access to it for 2 days like a regular rental - I have to say it seems reasonable to me. To the point that I hope these streaming first run movies do well enough that it becomes a regular thing in the future.

For country music fans, “Quarantine”:

And the musical version of “Stay The F*** At Home!”

Hoopla has always been a free streaming service through your library. New for the Quarantine is that they have a “Bonus Borrow” section that has streaming content that does not count as one of your monthly borrows.

Most libraries, at least around me, have closed. Because of this, they actually have doubled the amount of borrows we get. Plenty of content to get.

Dinner and a Movie

Every Tuesday evening Phish is playing a video recording of a full show. They also released a new studio album last night.

I can pretty much guarantee that that will not happen, unless the movie theater business is significantly altered as a result of the virus.

Theatrical release has always been Hollywood’s largest source of income, and theaters have always insisted on a having an exclusive release “window” before any other platform: pay-per-view, airlines, cable, or broadcast. To be sure, those windows have been steadily shrinking, and if, after this crisis is over, a significant portion of the public never feels safe in a theater of any type again, the influence of multiplex exhibitors on this issue could be substantially reduced.

But assuming things go back more or less to normal sometime in the next year or so, we will not see any noticeable increase in home streaming of first-run movies.

(FYI, as is the case with so many things, if you have enough money, you can already stream first-run movies. Here is a story about a startup that was hoping last year to offer first-run films in home theaters for $2,500 a pop, on top of a $15,000 subscription. I suspect the virus may have put their plans on hold – or maybe accelerated them – but there are other similar services.)
