Quebec municipal merger

While searching around, I found this interesting disclaimer on a site:

The new City of Gatineau was created on January 1, 2002 in light of Québec’s municipal merger legislation.

All I know is that Hull doesn’t seem to be there anymore.
Québec’s municipal merger legislation. What? When? Why? Please explain.

I don’t know too much about it, but one of the current government’s mandates was to merge certain municipalities together - kind of like the Toronot MegaCity deal. It caused a lot of upset and annoyance, but it went though everywhere - all in the past year or two.

Montreal got all merged together for municipal goverment issues, under the “one island, one city” idea. Municipalities do maintain some independence (names, for one thing), but government is reogranized. Sherbrooke was another merger sites, with the joined towns (including Lennoxville, Rock Forest, Fleurimont, etc) now being called “borroughs”. This went through officially just this past year.

Like I said, I don’t know much about it, but there must be plenty of info out there on the net about it. That, or matt_mcl might show up with some information.

Wow, the Canadians sure do take a long time to get their act together and copy us New Yorkers.
