I just figured that I didn’t have a lot of time or necessarily a lot to say, so I went for quality over quantity. Then I got this really boring job and quality went out the window. Believe me, if I stay here much longer, I’ll be passing you soon!
See, I’m slightly insecure, and while I haven’t been registered long, I was a lurker for a while before that, and I am so amazed at the wit and intelegence levels that I have become scared to post.
I’ve been lurking since at least 2000 as well. I read the boards pretty much every day I’ve even had a dream about Dopers…
The thing is, most of the time when I realize I have something to say or contribute, someone else has already said it -better than I could have. And I think it would be annoying to everyone else to repeatedly post “yeah, what he/she said” or “me too” all the time.
I also don’t post much (have I made it to double digits yet?), but do frequent the boards. I believe its mainly because of the reasons that several people have already said in this thread. I don’t have anything to add that already hasn’t been covered. See this post for example.
I usually look at the date registered, and not the post count. Any schmuck can post 1000 posts a day, but someone who has been here for years, lurking or not, usually has my respect.
Another lurker checking in. I think the people here are great and love reading the board. I lurked for quite a while before registering, and have rarely posted since I logged in. Mostly because this place is not exactly newbie-poster friendly, and it seems I am almost as shy online as I am off.
Also because the few times I do get my courage up to post, when I hit the submit button it tells me I’m not logged in (even though I swear I DID log in) and my post disappears. I’ve learned that I can copy my post and paste it in after re-logging in, but it seems like an awful lot of work just kill someone’s thread.
See there, it did it again! And it even says “Logged in user: Mirth” How can I not be logged in if my name appears there? Ho hum.
dantheman shoo. You’ll scare us all back into our dark corners.
Lurker here too. And I even had a different screen name for about a year befor this one. Hmm I wonder if I can resurrect that one…
I manage a large topic-specific community on another site. I come here to read as a break, because the threads here are so much more widely varied in topic and because the members have a greater diversity of experience and viewpoints. I don’t post much mostly out of sheer inertia, which I think is kind of ironic for being a professional at this stuff.
I have an interesting exercise for any of you former lurkers…
Take one person who has a high post count (obviously, they can’t shut up, right?). Do a search on their posts. Look at the first post, or at least an early one.
It’s interesting to see how people evolve, get wiser and more mature. We were all awfully dopey once.
I’m not sure, but I think my mom might have the lowest post count out of all the lurkers (she registered in November 2000 and has 5 posts). She’s nervous that people will laugh at her spelling and grammar, so she only posts when I’m at home to review what she writes.
I don’t know if I still qualify as a lurker, but I’m on the boards almost every day. Like most of you, I feel that I have become close to some of the more interesting personalities here and that I’m actually part of the gang. This is one of the reasons why I never go to any of the dopefests. I know I’d show up and people would be like “AceofWHO? From DelaWHERE? Who let this guy in?”
de-cloaking lurkers, Unite!
actually, I have been positively verbose (for me) in the last few months here…but lurked constantly prior to that.
I frequented many other boards, but always came back to SDMB for serious reading, and intelligent conversation.
I’ve nearly quit posting anywhere else due to the sheer level of idiocy possesed by a seeming majority of internet denizens.
Ahh! Tell her to do what I do - blame it on the computer. You should see my typing when I use my laptop - the cursor has a habit of dropping in any old place and you never know what’s going to come out. I still haven’t gotten my mom to post anywhere with or without me being around. Some days I’m lucky if I can get her through reading her e-mail. And some days she just loses whatever attachments she’s trying to send. Since my roommate has refused to find a job for the last four months, looks like I’ll be having a lot more time to help Mom with the 'puter though…
