One of the great things about opera is so often NO ONE CAN IDENTIFY the language in which the performer is singing. Even if you’re fluent in it.

Sure you can. I had to have a language elective in undergraduate school, and choose German so that I could keep up with a Wagner libretto. Indeed, even if people speak the language in which the opera is sung, it is difficult to understand it.
I wish Janis Joplin and Grace Slick had taken up Wagner opera.
