Queer Eye 8/12 - Andrew L

Just saw this for the first time (two shows, last week’s married guy with the messy apartment and today’s single guy with the messy apartment).

The best part, for me, so far, is how nice these guys are. True, there’s a teeny bit of cattiness, but from what I’ve seen, they’re non-judgmental, understanding, tolerant, smart, and funny as hell.

I was expecting extreme bitchiness, cutting remarks and mean-spiritedness. Guess I’ve been watching too much reality TV.

These guys are just wonderful.

I have a question… I’ve seen every episode but the very first (with the artist) and have wondered ever since what happened to Blair. You know, the black guy that Jai took over for. Was there some reason he didn’t make the cut and why doesn’t their niche on Bravo say anything about him?

And I SO love the show. Both me and hubby (who’d be willing to be done by the Fab 5 if we lived in NY – gee, that sounds interesting!) think poor Thom deserves three times the salary of the others. My God does he work his ass off, cleaning (ugh!!!), shopping and then decorating. But regardless, they all crack me up and are utterly adorable. If only I had friends like that.

::: wistful sigh :::

I’ve never read what happened to Blair, other than that he was hired before Jai and only made the first two episodes (although the first episode that aired was a Jai episode) before he asked to be let out of his contract. He seemed pretty good, loading up (the long haired guy with the diesel driving girlfriend) with CDs and adding books and artwork to another guy’s house.

The “Culture” guy is so far the least fleshed out of the roles; I don’t think they’ve quite figured out what to do with it, but then I guess they really couldn’t call it the “Fab Four” for copyright reasons.

This is one of those shows that makes me say “I was sooo wrong”. I thought it was one of the stupidest ideas I’d ever heard for a show and I was expecting it to be bitchy and stereotypical; instead it’s 4 1/2 guys who really know their business and how to make a difference, plus the first time Kyan looked at me… well, let’s just say “Kyan, you had me at ‘shave with the grain’”.

Sampiro, Sampiro…poor deluded Sampiro

Kyan never looked at you, and if he did, it was only to say “see what Otto has that you will never possess!”

Anyone watch the Fab 5 on Leno last night? Kevin Costner was down at the far end of the couch, looking even more dyspeptic than usual. Each of the 5 offered up what they thought straight guys had the most problem with in their individual area of expertise. Carson: dirty underwear everywhere. Kyan: shaving without product. Ted: “Just like straight guys don’t ask directions, they don’t ask for help in restaurants.” Can’t remember Jai’s or Thom’s off the top of my head. Apparently Costner’s engaged and Leno suggested the Fab 5 do his wedding. Costner started shifting around uncomfortably…

Tonight they will be back on, making over Jay and the set.

Well, speaking as a StraightGuy, it’s a combo of things. Such as:

 1. Spending too much time in the bathroom is considered unseemly unless you’re sitting on the pot reading porn;

 2. Spending a lot of time on grooming is considered girly;

 3. It’s best to get in and out of the bathroom as quickly as possible to get rid of that awful knocking sound and the cries of “hurry up, I need to use the bathroom!” (Best invention ever- bathrooms with two sinks. Seriously.);

 4. See #2; and

 5. We usually shave in the morning, and it’s always a tight time frame to get the job done.

I’m not saying its defensible behavior, but it’s grounded in something.

And I gotta second the endorsement of Ted. He’s my personal fave.

i love Jai…while i am curious, i confess: who cares what happened to Blair, he was a poor replacement for the boy who came right off of Rent

I SO wish I had cable. Watched the NBC episode last night (too cut guy proposing to his Armenian gf)… I was as teary as the Fab 5.

ummm… anyone willing to send some episodes on tape to a poor girl? :slight_smile:

(BTW, Kyan is my fav. Just WAY sweet.)

C’mon, you guys are missing the BEST quote! Andrew, regarding his back hair:

There were a couple of cute moments for me:
[li] When Andrew was in the SUV with the guys, and Carson rubbed up against him, Andrew laughed and said, “Did you just rub the gay on me?”[/li][li] When Andrew talked to his girlfriend and said they had found his pornos–he sounded just like a high school kid getting busted by his parents finding his pornos.[/li][li] When Thom confronted Andrew about his disgusting shower, Andrew laughed sheepishly and asked if that’s where the dirt belonged.[/li]
I thought Andrew was cute, he lost a lot of years when he shaved and dressed better. I’ve got to say, the funniest scene was when the guys found Andrew’s porn stash and were busting him. The one scene that nauseated me a little was when Kyan (I think) went over Andrew’s chest with a clipper–all I could think of was Andrew was getting his chest lawn mowed. He’d just had his back waxed and he still had too much body hair.

Check out "America’s Best Christian Betty Bowers’ take on QE4TSG, incidentally (and know in advance, YES, it is a joke):

Well, Otto, Sampiro, et al.- you probably don’t want to click on this link, the consequences could be too dire to imagine…

Um, oops. I meant “preview”, not “post”.

Really, I did.

I have to leave the board for about 5 minutes, k?

God bless you, smaft.

Blessed art thou amongst Dopers, smaft… may all troubles be removed from your life as if they were but whiskers being shaved along the grain of truth by the blade of righteousness, and may you come to rest in the dressing room of Kyan…
