Yes, we are the 50th state, except instead of potatoes and ham, we have rice and spam.
I never gave it too much thought, but I believe the “suck it up” is pretty much the correct answer, distance be darned.

Ah yes, that explains the big WHOOSHing sound I hear.
Why not hire a local lawyer? He can likely handle plea-bargains and such for you. You may never have to go back.
Guys, guys, guys… I KNOW Hawaii is a state in the US, I go there roughly every other year. I’m asking, does it work like every other state in the US, even though it’s far away and is a high tourist destination.
And what’s with the “my beloved Maryland” comment? A tad touchy aren’t we? lol
And what’s with all the hostility in this thread? Jesus, I asked a legit question and I wanted to know if there was a factual answer to it. I don’t see anything out of the ordinary with my question. There are some places that speed up their court processes because they are vacation areas, such as Ocean City MD. I was wondering if Hawaii was one of them.
Far away from where? The mainland? Yes. But what difference does it make if you are from New England on vacation in southern California and get busted?
If you make bail, you show up for your court date as promised. Why should it matter about distance among the states? The only thing that comes to mind is the seriousness of the crime and your resources to avoid showing up for court.
I don’t believe that’s true.
The criticism the OP’s getting here surprises me as well. The matter at question here is not “your resources to avoid showing up for court” but rather the resources involved in actually showing up. Maybe, in fact, the courts don’t care how hard it is for you to make a, say, minor disorderly conduct trial in Hawaii two months hence, but it’s certainly got to be an issue that comes up all the time.
Most American state criminal courts require the defendant to physically appear in court at their arraignment and/or pretrial and/or trial and/or sentencing.
As for the OP, if it appears that the defendant is likely not to appear for his later court dates, they can require him to post a high dollar bailbond. Bailbondsmen don’t like it when their clients don’t show up in court. Further, when criminal defendants don’t show up in court, their names are entered into the criminal database so that if the person ever encounters a police officer back on the mainland, the police’s computer will show that the person has an outstanding warrent, and they will take appropriate action, such as arresting the person and notifying the Hawaiian court that they’ve got their man.
How about this for the OP? Is buying a small amount of pot a misdemeanor? Say, possession of less than one ounce with no intent to distribute?
If so, it might just be a fine…
Sorry, I did not mean to give the OP a hard time (although I could not resist the “taking your own weed” remark ).
But I do find it strange that someone would think the authorities in a particular state might give special treatment to a criminal defendant just because he might find it inconvenient to return for his court case.
Sorry for the snarkiness. But in all seriousness, I think I can safely say, on behalf of most or all of the other responders, that we don’t understand why you think Hawaii might be different than other “high tourist destinations” such as New York, Los Angeles, or Miami. The only real difference that I see is that in Hawaii all the tourists arrive by airplane, whereas in other places, it is merely most or many who arrive by plane. And I don’t see why that should make such a difference to the running of the courts.
Ohhh! Now I understand your question! I wish you had mentioned this a few days ago! Please give us more details! What sort of shortcuts does Ocean City offer to its tourists, which one would not find in a non-tourist area?
(By the way, on reviewing the old posts, I now see that I already asked you this same question all the way at the beginning of this thread:
