Question about board rules; in the Pit only on a technicality

Two things:

1.) It wasn’t a warning; just a note.
2.) astro was encouraging people to download the video:

Viewing it isn’t illegal; downloading it without NBC’s permission is. (Unless there are exceptions in copyright law of which I’m not aware that cover this and allow such permission-free downloading.)

Lissener, YouTube and NBC have a strategic partnership where NBC provides promotional clips and YouTube advertises them elsewhere in the site. It is the exact opposite of relevant.

If you want to continue using it as an example, go ahead, but don’t be surprised when nobody pays attention to the actual issue, and just points out that this clip is legal. If you want to actually discuss this issue, start off by admitting this particular clip is 100% grade A kosher, and quit digging.

I wish lissener hadn’t started this thread. I wish I hadn’t tried to share mp3s of obscure and forgotten Christmas music. I was totally in the wrong and will completely accept any smack-downs…

Except…

Where it concerns the future of my posting authorized links. I beg, plead, PLEASE don’t let my fuckup (or lissener’s defense on my behalf) affect my sharing of legitimate files. I’m willing to give an entire rundown of my past history with Happy Rhodes, and I have no doubt she’d be willing to write Skip or Ed or Cecil himself if need be. I’m not trying to sell her music. Most of it’s free for the asking. Her last album was 8 years ago, so it’s not like either one of us has anything to gain here. The people who do like her music are the ones gaining, and that’s always been my point of view.

Cool. Then, if a test case is somehow necessary (I think the issue is clear enough without it, but whatever), as I’ve already said above my intended example was the “post your favorite YouTube link” thread. Again, just an example to make it clear what I was talking about.

Does she own her songs? If she’s produced an album it’s fairly likely that someone else does.

She does own all her songs. She has 10 albums and owns every song on each. I know that’s a worry with a lot of artists, but early on she took a cue from one of her biggest influences, Kate Bush: Control Your Own Music/Guard Your Publishing Rights With Your Life. She’s turned down (or been turned down) for major label record contracts because of that self-imposed rule. She’d rather remain an obscure indie artist with a cult following than give up control of her music. She’s a smart lady.

I take that back. One song is a cover, a medley of Yes songs. She owns the recording, but of course not the songs.

There are also websites that use these utilities and make it even easier, but unless even if you have high-speed internet access the server speeds are sometimes so slow as to make it not worth while.

I am also going to hijack this thread, and pit all the “youtubers” that think it is “cool” to solarize their videos. I think that just is stupid.
