Question about Disk Utility in Mac OS 10.6.8

Hey Mac-heads out there-

Every once in a while I run the Disk Utility application, perhaps every month or so. I have never seen perceptible changes in performance, but it makes me feel pro-active! :slight_smile:

Today I ran the application and did my normal thing (which is run it until it says everything seems fine, usually a maximum of three passes). I did it probably ten times now and it seems the same. I restarted and ran again, same result.

What gives? Should I be concerned? Should I start up in that weird text only black screen mode and do the fsck thingie? I had heard that that is no longer necessary for this iteration of OS X.

Another possibility is connecting via Firewire my two laptops using target disk mode and trying the repairs from the other machine. Might this help? One hitch, if it matters- the other laptop is older and running an older version of OSX, as in pre…Leopard. Making it…Tiger? Tabby? :slight_smile:

Maybe I should just pretend it never happened. Everything runs as it always has, after all.

Correct. Performance has been pretty even through all of this. All I meant was this was not a performance issue, the speed of the computer has been pretty even throughout, no crashes, etc.

When I run my Disk Utility application (I failed to mention I am using the ‘Repair Disk Permissions’ function), even after many repetitions, I fail to get a message stating that permissions are indeed in order (I don’t remember the exact wordage here, as it’s not happening). I usually am able to get this message, albeit after two or three passes. Nno matter how many times I run it, it continues to find issues. Hope this is clear now.

I’m not sure this is a ‘problem’- as I said, the whole computer operates fine. No complaints, really. It’s just annoying that I cannot get the permissions to be in order (apparently).

Well I see lots of files that should be directories, and links that should be files.
There’s no way that DU will be able to “fix” this.

Is Disk Utility reporting the same issues over and over, or is reporting different issues each time?

“repairing permissions” is to the Mac what “registry cleaning” is to Windows. Pointless 99% of the time.

10.6 is Snow Leopard, 10.5 is Leopard. Check the Wikipedia article.

Other than that, earlier versions of DU probably won’t work properly as the method of checking what permissions a file should have has changed. See the Apple support article about it.

FYI -
I just ran Repair Permissions on my Snow Leopard machine, and got a whole pile of errors - the same Java issues you are reporting. So, I wouldn’t worry about it unless you are having trouble with Java.
