Does anyone know where the German race in the movie “Driven” was filmed? The movie was filmed during the 2000 season, and they didn’t have a race in Germany last year. They are racing there this year, but the real race is on an oval (and CART has an agreement with the FIA that they would only race on ovals outside of North America), and it was a road course in the movie. I didn’t recognize the track, and I assume it’s some sort of test track somewhere because it seemed ridiculously narrow to be racing on.
There was a CART race at the new Lausitzring last year, and another is scheduled this year too. But it’s an oval, not like the “German Motor Speedway” in the movie. The scene with the cars blasting through the end of a hairpin, through the grass, and into a river look nothing like the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, I can tell you from having watched last year’s F1 Grand Prix de Canada right at that spot.
This thread runs the risk of making the movie seem better than it was. Stallone and Harlin got so carried away with computer animation that none of the racing scenes were even physically possible. The rest of it was the absolute worst acting, directing, and scriptwriting I’ve ever paid to see.
I’m very familiar with Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve, and it looked nothing like that in the movie. Especially the banked turn, there’s nothing like that on the Grand Prix circuit.
BTW, the German race is new for this season. On this year’s schedule it’s listed as the inaugural race.
I agree though, the movie was crap. After the first 30 minutes, I didn’t care about the story or characters anymore and just wanted to see some crashes, and there wasn’t enough of them to make up for the rest of the film.
