question about editing a picture

I would like to write on a picture that I am going to email. I suppose what I really mean is type, but every time I try, it makes the background behind it white, How can I keep it transparant? I am using MS Paint, maybe I should try another program?

I don’t know what version of Paint you’re using, but in mine, when I select the text tool, two icons representing tool properties appear on the toolbar beneath all the tool icons. Mine defaults to transparent, but apparently yours defaults to the white background. Click the other property icon after you select the text tool but before you type anything.

If you want another program to try, check out the Gimp: http://www.gimp.org/~tml/gimp/win32/

It takes a lot of getting used to, but is quite powerful.

**Ringo[/] gave you the answer. Click the “A” icon to type the text and jut below you’ll see two boxes pop up…on the left…with cylinder, blocks and a sphere as the icon pic. Choose the bottom one, then go type and your problem will be solved.

(thought this extra detail would help)
