A couple of things I would like to add. First even by your own standards, how are you ripping them off by downloading mp3s to a cd that you already paid for?
Also, who is ripping off whom? They sold you a product that is essentially defective. Add this to the fact that CDs cost just as much as they did when the came out 20 years ago, while everything else has come down in price. Not to mention the recent payola scandal that revealed big music cos like Sony bribing DJs to play certain songs than others. Again I ask, who is ripping off who in this situation?
As far as downloading you don’t need napster. Limewire is good for mp3s, so is emule although it is better for large files like movies abd programs. You can also use IRC (internet relay chat) to get mp3s.
and here I thought maybe there was a big free mp3 internet site that I just dint know about or something.
I have 3 letters all typed up, with cc: so that all parties are aware that the others got the same letter. In looking at some of my other CDs, I notice that not all have the Compact Disc logo on the package, but all seem to have it on the CD itself. That could make it hard to determine pre-purchase if its an ok CD or not.
Also, thanks to t-bonham for the somewhat wearying but prolly effective return strategy. I’m on it in the a.m.
And I hear that Sony’s CEO once kicked a cat and has been known to speak crossly to children. Plus I don’t like the font they use on some CD covers and on top of all that, I mean “Sony”, what the hell kind of a word is that anyway?
Ok, now that I can finally listen to this shiznit, I gotta say… it’s just some kind of supreme irony that a band that calls itself totally anti-establishment, even has a song called Amerikan Beauty on an album called Only In Amerika, would have such a draconian fascistic control freak thing like this copy protection on their CD.
With any luck, this will be their last album on this record label.
It’s like we learned in the 70s… DIY rules.
My thanks to Mr2001, t-bonham, MAGunter, Princhester, Thin Lizzy and everyone else for their help.
Music is for listening not protecting ya know what I’m sayin’?
I think I’ve posted here more than once an explantion to people about how the music industry is a business. It is not in the business of providing joy to the world and cheaper music to the maximum number of people. It is in the business of making money. The price of CDs are therefore set at the price people are prepared to pay. If people are getting ripped off it’s because they are prepared to be ripped off.
And any discussion that trys to relate the market value of particular music to a subjective evaluation of its creative value is pointless. What you think is valueless ‘crappy’ music may be highly valued by someone else.
Lets see. VCRs, microwaves, tvs, cellphones, dvd players, all have come down dramatically from when they were new. CDs are over 20 years old and still the same.
Evidently they are NOT willing to pay. You have not been paying attention…cds sales have been declining for a long time now. Just like with movie sales dropping. People like movies (which is why DVD sales are soaring) but are sick of paying $9 for a movie and $4 for a damn soda.
