Just saw this for the umpteenth time (one of my favorite movies) but just realized it has a massive unexplained plot point, if not an actual plot hole, for the first time.
Who calls Old Joe to tell him about the details of the Rainmakers birth? And more importantly why?
From the context we are led to believe they are some kind of anti-Rainmaker resistance, which is never mentioned again before or after that point. Which is all well and good (one of the cooler things about the movie is how everything about the Rainmakers rise power is left completely to your imagination).
But why (with, it’s implied, their dying act) would they call Old Joe to tell him those details? He doesn’t decide to go back in time alive until the day his wife is killed.. Even if he was somehow involved with them what good would giving him those details be? In that timeline young Joe kills his loop so they can’t know what old Joe is about to do. How would they possibly know he was going to back and could use them?
Also why do you think Rian Johnson decide to have this weird unexplained plot point? Does it really add anything to the movie? There were any number of ways he could have had old Joe know about those details
