Question about medicare

I’ve tried using the government site to find the answer, but I guess I don’t know the correct key words.

My husband and I are covered under the health insurance that stayed with me after I retired from federal service. I am nearly 3 years older than he is, so I will be eligible for medicare before he is. What I’m trying to figure out is whether I’ll be able to keep the insurance so he’ll be covered until he’s 65. If someone knows or can point me to a webpage that explains how medicare and dependent insurance works, I would be most appreciative.

It’s not an immediate concern - I’m just 61, but I don’t want to wait till the last minute, either.

You can keep your insurance under the Federal Plan until you affirmatively disavow it. When Medicare kicks in, you can make Medicare your primary insurer and your federal insurance a secondary insurer.

Thanks - that’s good to know. I was worried about having to find coverage for my husband.
