Can some explain why I can’t collect unemployment in nj after working for the board of ed and getting laid off. They keep telling me that my claim is unpayable but I’ll receive credit don;t understand that can someone help.
jobless1, I’m making this post into a new thread, and moving it to the General Questions forum from the About This Message Board forum.
IANAL, but I am a former teacher and former school board member in New Jersey. As far as I know you can, just not immediately. For example, if you were laid off in June, the end of the school year, the summer months don’t count because the schools are not in session anyway, so you wouldn’t have been working regardless of the layoff. An employee might already have a job lined up for September but that job hasn’t started yet because of seasonal scheduling. The system was never designed to provide assistance to teachers over the summer; their contract is considered annual. Some districts will let you voluntarily set aside a portion of your September to June salary so that you still receive a paycheck in July and August.
What the UI office might have meant is that if September arrives and you have been actively looking for work and couldn’t get any, perhaps they will credit you with the total amount since you were let go.
If you are really laid off then you will be paid for the summer as long as you keep calling in for benefits. If you end up returning to work for a Board of Education in Sept then you will not be paid.
