Why did they have to fake a robbery scene in the vault when Clooney, Damon, and the acrobat had actually broken in already, why not just show the vault doors open, etc?
Well, it was misdirection so they could get out with the money. All $160 million. There was no other way for them to get everybody out, including Clooney, and not have Andy Garcia’s character suspect him. I guess. Kind of a WAG.
diku more or less nailed it. It was a crucial part of the whole plan to fool Benedict into thinking that they were leaving half of the money behind as a hostage. Remember Rusty tells Benedict on the phone, “Look closely at your monitor. You’ll see we’re only packing up about half of it.”
One thing that screwed me up is, when Garcia sees them packing up the money in the fake vault video, doesnt he recognize Clooney from when he was in the resturaunt with Tess? It seems like you would be able to see his face on that tape.
Ah, but you have to remember that when Benedict ordered the tape re-played, there was no “Bellagio” written on the vault floor. The security monitors were doubly fooled. First, they showed everything normal when it was not… then, they showed a fake robbery. Remember how they built their own vault, complete with money to do a filming? That tape was played for security, while the three down in the vault did the real packing up of (all) the money.

Bah, damn. I misread your post and answered what didn’t need to be answered. Whoops. However, as to the real question… who says that it was Clooney/Daniel Ocean that was on the tape? Any group members could have done that. Also, he knew that Ocean was in the casino (when he told security to watch him), and last he knew, his goons were taking care of Ocean anyway.
And heck, even if he suspected, the guy “beating up” Ocean would merely say “I was with him the entire time,” and that sort of blows up the theory. I’m certain he “knows” Ocean was involved somehow, but not within the vault itself.

I guess that makes sense.
Roommate says that they were wearing ski-masks in their recording in the duplicate vault, so even if it -was- Danny in there, they wouldn’t see the face (Makes sense, they don’t want to give a video of themselves either way!). I’ll have to re-watch it to make sure.
Slight hi-jack here, but why at the closing credits does Julia Robers get an “Introducing” tag?
“Introducing Julia Roberts as Tess Ocean.”
I thought that was only for an actor making their big screen debut. She has been in several blockbuster movies before. Heck, she even won an academy award in one of them. Anybody know?
The Julia Roberts credit was just a joke.
I think it was a joke.
That’s a good point, within the context of the movie. However, if it’s possible for the viewing audience to make out the people on the tape, we shouldn’t be able to tell that it’s not Danny, Linus, and Yen. Because not only is it a surprise to Benedict that it’s a tape, it’s a surprise to us, and we don’t know it yet.
Can somebody explain the title to me? Why is ocean made possessive? The ocean has eleven of something? Or is it a contraction of “ocean is”?
Weren’t there 11 guys involved?
The main character’s name was Ocean. He chose ten other people to help him carry off the robbery. Ocean’s is possessive of Eleven. It was Mr. Ocean’s team of eleven, who pulled it off.
Oh, now see, I overanalyzed the title. I saw it as Ocean’s ten guys plus the girl he gets.
If you’ve seen the movie, there’s a scene that makes it pretty explicit what the title is about. Before Ocean goes to pick up Linus in Chicago, he and Rusty are at a bar, and Rusty has his head on the counter. Danny says, “Well, that’s ten. Do you think we need one more? You think we need one more. Alright, we’ll get one more.”
This isn’t worth starting a new thread about, so I’m just going to ask it here.
Where did the first set of bags come from? That is, the bags that the Bellagio’s security carries out, puts in the van, and then they blow up when the guards are closing in. The SWAT team hadn’t arrived yet, and Linus, Danny, and, uh, the Chinese guy didn’t have them with 'em. I’m confused about that.
I think that the idea is that the bags were brought in in the deposit box/serving tray with the contortionist-- they’d have been empty, so they could have been folded up. The call-girl flyers were brought in using the plain black SWAT “equipment” bags. In the vault, the flyers were switched to the first bags and the booty went into SWAT bags.
It stretches one’s credulity a tiny bit to imagine them packing down that small, but it’s the only way it makes any sense at all.
I agree that that makes the most sense. However, is it possible that they had someone else working the elevator shaft? The elevator that the decoy money emerges from is not the same as the elevator that leads down to the vault, remember.
Let’s see. Danny, Linus, and Yen were in the vault. Reuben and Virgil were at the airport. Presumably Turk was driving the SWAT van. Livingston was back in the room. And I seem to remember there being four SWAT team members, so it would have to be Rusty, Saul, Basher, and Frank. Darn, I guess they couldn’t. Oh well.
