Question about old question about Andrew Jackson

Hello,
I was searching through the archives and came upon a question written in october of 2002 about where Andrew Jackson would be placed among history’s mass murderers. While my question is not about Andrew Jackson it is a question that perplexes me. Chiang Kai-Shek is mentioned as one of the largest mass murderers (listed #4). I recently took AP World History and did reasonably well (94, coughwith10pointcurve), err, better than most in the class. I remember reading about the afore mentioned chinese politician.
Query #1-Didn’t Chiang have an alternate spelling for his name? I seem to remember a different spelling in which the first part of his name began with a J and the last part bore no resemblence to Kai-Shek, Jiang something or the other.
Query #2-I don’t remember reading about Chiang bieng particularly homocidal. If i remember correctly, he was the head of one of the two head political parties at the time (the other bieng a communist). From what i remember, he lost popularity because he ran into the mountains when the Japanese invaded during World War 2. The Communists, on the other hand, fought back(though to little success) using Guerrela style war fair. That fighting back was supposed to be at least a minor factor in why the communists won out in China.

SO, am i right? or do i need to be put in my place and my grade lowered to a 94 with a 30 point curve?
P.S. i get my AP Test Results back near the middle of summer and hopefully i will get a 5, or at least a 4, so pray for me.
P.S.S. The book i was using in my class was a relativly non-Eurocentric publication that my teacher enjoyed, it was by Bentley and some other guy and was two volumes in paper back(sorry that i can’t remember the name, it’s been two weeks since school let out, i can’t be expected to retain all the knowledge i gained last year)

Welcome to the SDMB, ReaperMan. Here’s a link to the article you refer to:

Was Andrew Jackson one of the world’s most prolific mass murderers?

Chiang Kai-shek was also known as Jiang Jie-shi.

Thanks for the link, i just read a post about making sure to put the link of the question you are commenting on, oops. Thanks also for clearing up the alternate spelling, and if anyone could post something about Jiang or Chiang or whatever and how he became #4 i would appreciate it.

Sorry for the minimal replies last night, ReaperMan. I didn’t want to say anything on the charge of “mass murder” against Chiang Kai-shek until I’d done a little more reading online.

I was curious that the only pointer to Chiang Kai-shek being in the infamous “10 million club” was from R. J. Rummel’s book. Not that this cast any doubt on the points he made, it just meant that confirmation from other sources that weren’t politically motivated are difficult to find.

However, without reading his book, just going on what I’ve nutted out so far, it seems that at least one period lead to the assertion of “mass murderer” and that is the failed Chinese Revolution of 1925 to 1927. It’s from the counter-revolutionary measures of the Kuomintang in cities such as Nanking, Shanghai and Canton that he earned the reputation as “hangman” as far as the left wing were concerned.

From this page:

This is only a partial answer. I would say only a reading of Rummel’s book would point out the sources for his information with any clarity.
