Since they seem to be following the exact words used in the sticky thread, would “Fuck ewe” be acceptable? I don’t see it in the sticky thread. What about “Fuck yew!”?
Better yet, ask the Moderators how they feel when posters think they can use tricks that wouldn’t fool a third-grader to get around a rule, instead of making an earnest effort to actually follow the rule in the first place?
And Hal is a Mod now.
I’m sorry, I thought this forum was for asking questions about the rules?? Is it not? I can’t follow the rules at the same time I ask about the rules?
So far, the only answer seems to be “Cause the sticky thread says, that’s why!” but nobody can answer WHY the sticky thread says that. Analogous to “Why is that the Policy? 'Cause that’s what the policy says!”
Thanks for the snark though!
Asking if saying “fuck ewe” or “fuck yew” would be o.k. if saying “fuck you” is forbidden doesn’t seem like you are merely asking for a policy clarification-It looks more like a game of “I’m not touching you! I’m not touching you!” with the rules to me.
Just my opinion.
You’ve been here 13 years and still haven’t figured out that TPTB prefer not to go into specifics about any rules in an attempt to keep rules lawyers at bay?
Fucking a cactus is similar to fucking a watermelon. You cut a hole in the fleshy part. If you’re careful, no spines.
Yes, but they have already done that. They moderate the stuff that is specifically called out in the sticky threads. Phrases such as “Fuck off” and “Go fuck a cactus” are not moderated because they are specifically NOT in the sticky thread. I simply wondered how the phrases in the sticky thread were chosen for inclusion in the sticky thread. Saying “because it’s in the sticky thread” isn’t really an answer.
So, if they moderate, as they say, in strict accordance with what is explicitly in the sticky thread, then phrases such as “Fuck Ewe!” and “Fuck Yew!” would be allowed, since they are not explicitly in the sticky thread.
If they DON’T moderate in strict accordance with what is explicitly stated in the sticky thread, then why do they allow phrases like “Fuck off” and “Go fuck a cactus” and not allow “Fuck you”?
Because Miller chooses to and his reasoning is in the first reply.
Note that he also allows a certain amount of trolling in the Pit even though a sticky says no trolling is allowed anywhere.
No, he retired last November.
I’m not asking for a policy clarification. I’m asking why that is the policy. You may consider any question somebody has as a way for them to play childish games, but I don’t. I don’t use any of the allowable variants now, and I wouldn’t use any of them if they were all allowed. To me, saying “fuck off” is as similar in childishness as “Shut up, fatty!” or “That’s not what your mom said last night” Doesn’t take a genius with a cracking wit to tell someone to fuck off.
I simply wanted to know how the policy was derived, that’s all, since to me “Fuck off” and “Fuck you” are not really different.
While I think these rules are dumb, I suspect the perceived difference is that “fuck you” could be interpreted as “I’m going to fuck you,” or some other variation of nonconsensual sex implied. “Fuck off” doesn’t have the sexual connotation. “Go fuck yourself” is clearly consensual.
I dunno. I also find it puzzling.
If you’re not losing sleep over it, and you wouldn’t use those words, anyway, why does it make such a big difference to you?
Why do you care what difference it makes to me?
I don’t, really. Just curious. If you don’t have an answer, fine.
That’s my answer too!
The simple answer is that the Pit language rules are enforced literally, verbatim. The spirit of the rules isn’t considered, just the letter of the rules.
The “and variants…” portions of those rules is not enforced anymore if it ever was.
The reason why is the same reason as many things SDMB: because that’s just the way it is.
It’s been discussed eleventy billion times and that is the boiled down result of those eleventy billion threads, but you can find more details and answers from TPTB by searching for them.
If you believe that, then would you agree that “Fuck Yew!” would be acceptable since it is not literally verbatim spelled out in the sticky thread?
IMHO there is only one way to look at rules. That is, forget whatever the rules are as written. The only rule that counts is how the rule is enforced. In the Pit, that is Miller’s territory and however he interprets the rules is what counts. I spend little time in the Pit, but it appears that he is consistent in the application so there really should’t be too much question about what the rules are.
I’ve never seen Miller even give a warning for saying, “Fuck you.” He’ll almost always give a mod note. He’s given warnings for more serious offenses, but not for language.
